Glass does not seem to be a good material nowadays. In fact there are many instances that shown to us that tempered glass is quite a dangerous material which could surprisingly explode in unexpected moments. We have tempered glass cubicles shattered in some toilets. And now we have glassware shattered out of no reason.

Luckily, no one was hurt. And the kid got to eat his breakfast, with a science experiment to go with it. The shattering is seen in tempered glass, which is a type of glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass -- although instances of shattering are really rare. This means that if the glass breaks, it will crumble into small granular chunks, instead of jagged shards that could more easily cause serious injuries.

I don’t think coffee shop glasses are made of tempered glass which should be more costly. The reason could be due to wear n tear. With frequent uses, there may be hairline cracks and when hot water is pour into it, it expanded the hairline crack and thus caused it to break n explode. I frequently also noticed chips on the top of the glasses at various coffee shops. Maybe, when NEA goes to check on cleanliness n hygiene of the coffee shops, they should inspect the glass n cups to ensure safety.
