THE Penang Harmony Centre, a RM2.5mil resource centre for people of different religions, has opened its doors to the public. The first of its kind in the country, the centre will act as a place for Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs and Taoists to hold religious activities including retreats, seminars, lectures and classes. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the whole idea behind the concept of shared space for various religious groups is to promote religious harmony. “We want to forge a closer understanding by the use of common premises,” said Chow when opening the centre in Scotland Road in Penang recently. “The idea is to have different groupings in close proximity to learn about their shared values and beliefs despite the differences in rituals and practices. “Any one of us can join in this journey of self-discovery in the spirit of togetherness.” Chow said the Penang Harmony Centre was blessed to have a peace pole donated by Gandhi Peace Centre chairman Datuk Dr Anwar Fazal.
