KUALA LUMPUR: The government is urging local oil and gas services and equipment (OGSE) industry players to strengthen their existing capabilities in order to grow as technical solutions providers and become internationally recognised players.

Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said this was important to enhance the industry's competitiveness and capabilities, while ensuring the continued growth of the OGSE sector.

"In terms of potential or capability, the country’s OGSE players should look at the opportunities available and not become complacent with their existing strengths.

"Malaysia will certainly benefit from having its own resources, such as gas and petroleum. However, we also recognise the need to continue seeking broader opportunities for the country’s OGSE industry,” he said.

He said this to reporters after attending a fireside chat titled "The Prosperity Equation: Capturing the Wealth Beyond the Wellhead” at the Oil & Gas Asia (OGA) 2026 exhibition at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) here, today.

Meanwhile, Akmal Nasrullah said the government’s efforts to drive the energy transition represent an opportunity to restructure the national economy, enabling economic opportunities to yield higher returns and value.

He said the energy transition would also create more opportunities through the introduction of new technologies, expand opportunities for innovation, and enable local talent to pursue highly skilled jobs offering better salaries.

"We also view this (energy transition) as an opportunity for local OGSE companies to build their strength and determination to establish themselves on the international stage.

"We believe that, with the experience and expertise they have accumulated over the years, Malaysian OGSE companies should explore the potential not only to provide services, but also to offer solutions and leverage existing technologies to develop their own innovations that can be marketed in international markets,” he added. - Bernama
