Greener chemistry: Lubrizol unveils PFAS-free peptide portfolio

The manufacturer of advanced specialty ingredients has announced the elimination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), from its peptide synthesis process. Beginning June 2025, Lubrizol is introducing three commercially available peptides synthesized without PFAS.
“While the use of PFAS in cosmetic ingredients is limited and not typically present in final formulations, Lubrizol is taking proactive steps to eliminate these substances from peptide synthesis processes due to global environmental concerns and tightening regulations,” explains the company.
The new PFAS-free peptides – Uplevity peptide, Uplevity e-Lift peptide, and Leuphasyl peptide – are produced via Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS). This Nobel Prize-winning method typically requires reagents such as TFA, a PFAS. While TFA is not added to final cosmetic product formulations and is currently out of scope in some regulations, Lubrizol says that evolving restrictions in both the United States and the European Union require a forward-thinking approach.
In order to develop the PFAS-free peptide range, Lubrizol has prioritized a science-driven, performance-validated approach to meet the highest standards of quality and functionality. “We recognize that sustainability is not just about being first—it’s about doing it right,” Elena Cañadas, Global Marketing Director, Beauty, Home, Pharma & Nutra at Lubrizol. “Our PFAS-free peptides are the result of meticulous formulation work, regulatory foresight, and a deep respect for the planet.”
