She came out to her parents about eight years ago.

Comedian Gurmit Singh said that even though his 27-year-old daughter Gabrielle may not be what he wants her to be, he will still love her.

He revealed this on a Channel NewsAsia programme called The Assembly where he was interviewed by a panel of neurodivergent "journalists".

Asked how he had come to accept his oldest child being a "very well-known icon of the queer community", the Phua Chu Kang actor said: "Yeah, so she has taken that path and it was difficult at first because she's in the queer community. She does a show that's not TV-friendly for sure.

"But at the end of the day, she is still my daughter. Till the day I die, I will still love her."

Gurmit, 59, added: "We have differing opinions on things and career paths and life choices, but she still my flesh and blood.I'll still be there in a blink of an eye if she needs me.

"I also kind of reconcile that and akin that to when I made a decision to become an actor, my parents had high hopes for me to become, you know, a lawyer, a judge or whatever, policeman and then I became this comedian, an actor."

On her LinkedIn page, Gurmit's daughter calls herself Gabbi Virk and lists her experience as founder of cabaret show Queer The Year! and Queer ZineFest.

On Instagram, she is a burlesque dancer, "lap cat" and "professional hottie" named Lychee Bye and lists her pronouns as she/they/he/it.

On Facebook, her user name is Worms Wav.

On her YouTube channel where she is Gabbi Wenyi Ayane, her most recent video was posted in 2018 and it was her "coming out video".

She said in the video: "Personally, I’m not a big fan of labels. At some point, I said I was bisexual. Then I was like no, I’m pansexual. And now I kind of just go by queer because I’m attracted to people. I don’t really care about people’s gender when I’m attracted to them."

She said she had come out to her Christian parents a year and a half earlier by sending them a video when she was studying in England.

"They both texted me," recounted Gabrielle in the 2018 video.

"They were really sweet. They were like 'Thank you for telling us and feeling safe enough to tell us and we can tell that it’s something that’s very important to you and we’re glad that you opened up.'

"So I came home for Christmas break. During that break, both my parents took me out individually. My dad was really sweet… He was like 'I can’t control who you choose to love and I’m just going to support you.' And I was like yay!

"I know I’m really lucky because I know a lot of friends who can’t come out to their parents because their parents would not be this nice to them. So I am very, very grateful."

Gurmit told the interviewers about his daughter on the CNA programme: "I'll still be there in a blink of an eye if she needs me.

"I also kind of reconcile that and akin that to when I made a decision to become an actor, my parents had high hopes for me to become, you know, a lawyer, a judge or whatever, policeman and then I became this comedian, an actor.

"So as far as Gabrielle is concerned, as a parent, as long as she is happy, I'm happy. May not be what I want her to be or what I had hoped she would choose, but as long as it's legal and she's happy with it, I'm happy with it."

Gurmit and his wife Melissa Wong, who married in 1995, also have two sons, Elliot, 22, and Mikaela, 11.
