Heartbreaking photos show the widow of a veteran FDNY firefighter weeping at his funeral Friday alongside the young daughter he heroically saved before drowningoff the Jersey Shore.

Somber firefighters lined the streets outside the Vander Plaat Colonial Home in Fair Lawn, NJ, to honor tragic Teaneck, NJ, resident and Brooklyn Engine Company 226 member Mark Batista, 39, in the morning, ABC 7 reported.

In one particularly gut-wrenching photo, Batista’s widow, Lenin Ventura, is caught collapsing in sobs while clutching her husband’s helmet — with the couple’s 11-year-old daughter by her side.

Batista – a dad of three who served with the FDNY as an EMT and firefighter for 15 years – was killed when he tried to rescue his daughter from a rip current near a jetty off Sylvania Avenue Beach in Avon-by-the-Sea around 8:30 a.m. June 9.

Batista’s son called 911 from the shore, and first responders were able to save the girl after a frantic 10-minute search.

But Batista was swept under the waves.

His body was found submerged around 10 a.m. and was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center before he was pronounced dead.

Lifeguards were not on duty when the family was swimming.

“He rescued his daughter off the Jersey Shore when she was in peril. No greater act of love have any of us witnessed,” Engine Company 226 Captain Peter Culkin told CBS on Thursday.

“We are extremely proud of Mark. We miss him dearly. What we do now is take care of his family.”

FDNY rep Amanda Farinacci Gonzalez said of the late Brooklyn native last week, “Firefighter Batista was a dedicated public servant who spent fifteen years serving in the FDNY, as both an EMT and a firefighter.

“We join his family in mourning his tragic passing,”

The Engine 226 subsequently rallied around the family by launching a GoFundMe for funeral expenses.

“Mark always put his family first,” the company wrote on the fundraiser page.

“In many conversations, he would describe how his loving wife, Lenin, brings him peace. How proud he is of his sons and how his princess Leann was his world. He would visit his grandmother at a nursing home before and after every tour he worked and when he wasn’t responding to the various emergencies of New York City, he would be FaceTiming his daughter and speaking to members about fatherhood.

“In the firehouse, he was always a pleasure to work with. Always keeping a positive outlook on life. He was very loved and respected. You knew you had someone you can count on to get the job done if he was working.”

As of Friday afternoon, the GoFundMe had raised over $77,689 – over $50,000 above its $20,000 goal.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Batista is survived by two sons in their 20s.
