Broadcaster and Gogglebox star Gyles Brandreth, 73, on his new tour, a terrible joke about Hamlet and his wife not getting a word in.

How are you getting around Britain on your new tour?

I’m doing 40 theatres and it can be a nightmare getting from A to B. My wife is my roadie but I have a roadie who doesn’t like driving!

Even more, she hates me driving so we travel by train. At home, I get around on a tricycle because I don’t trust myself on a bicycle.

You’ve had a few accidents recently, haven’t you?

I jumped off the boat in the rain while filming Great Canal Journeys and I slid on the concrete towpath and bashed my eye.

Then, going shopping, I tripped on a bit of raised paving stone. I fell forward on to my wife and knocked her over and she broke her wrist.

I felt bad about it. I hope I haven’t reached the age where I’m falling a lot.

What’s it been like being a Gogglebox star?

I did it first with Sheila Hancock and they made her a dame. I then did it with Maureen Lipman and they made her a dame.
