Hangzhou Asian Games 2022 was originally scheduled to hold in September 2022 but the event was postponed to 2023 due to rising COVID-19 cases across the country.
Hangzhou is less than 200km away from Shanghai and Shanghai is currently facing a lockdown which has been ongoing for a few months to tackle a new wave of COVID-19 infections.
The Asian Game usually attracts more than 10,000 sportsmen and sportswomen across the district.
With the latest restriction across China, the country decided that it’s best to keep COVID-19 under control to prevent a bigger wide spread of the virus.
The Olympics Council of Asia thanked the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (HAGOC), the Chinese Olympic Committee and the stakeholders for working together to achieve this decision for safeguarding the people’s health and safety.
