HK actor Bowie Wu, 93, regrets not gifting his wife flowers when she was alive
Hong Kong actor Bowie Wu recently appeared on lyricist Gary Yeung’s YouTube show, where he opened up about his marriage and personal regrets.
Since kickstarting his acting career in 1953, Wu, 93, has appeared in major dramas such as Virtues Of Harmony II (2003-2005), The ‘W’ Files (2003), Forensic Heroes III (2011) and more.
In recognition of his contributions to the industry, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 Hong Kong Film Awards.
Yet behind the success, Wu admitted to carrying the weight of personal regrets. Among them include not being present for his children during their early years.
“I didn’t get along well with them back then. I rarely met them because I was so busy with work. Whenever I returned home, they would all be sleeping,” he shared.
Wu shares five children with his late wife Lui Wing Ho, who died from an illness in 2016.
He revealed during the interview that when he got married in 1957, his boss had insisted they keep it a secret as he was at the peak of his career.
Despite the secrecy, Lui remained patient and focused on taking care of their children.
“My wife is the love of my life. I don’t know what I would’ve done without her help, so I’ll always miss her. I had always hoped to walk with her for a few more years, but man proposes, God disposes,” he said.
The actor then revealed another one of his lingering regrets, which was never giving his wife flowers while she was alive.
To make up for it, he leaves flowers in front of her photo every few days.
“I’d also talk to her each night,” he added.
Wu is currently in a relationship with 90-year-old actress Law Lan.
The couple went public in September last year, with all of Wu’s children expressing full support for their romance.
