It doesn't matter if you're a model. It doesn't matter if you usually have such enviable skin that millions of people put their trust in your skin-care brand. It doesn't matter how much money you have. Perioral dermatitis can happen to anyone, Hailey Bieber included. And while she's not exactly thrilled to be going through a flare-up, she's more than happy to let her fans and followers know they're not alone if they're going through it, too.
On Thursday, July 17, Bieber shared a couple of close-ups—one with a goofy filter—to her Instagram Stories, writing, “perioral dermatitis flare,” and, “always flares when I'm traveling a lot, sleep deprived, hormones, the wrong SPF, new products, stress.” And that pretty much checks out, though board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, previously told Allure, “Despite being common, we still do not understand why perioral dermatitis develops.”
But what exactly is perioral dermatitis? Board-certified dermatologist Corey L. Hartman has told Allure it's a facial rash that usually shows up around the mouth, presenting as red and sometimes itchy bumpiness. Sometimes found around other parts of the face, it may be mistaken for acne or rosacea, so it's best to go to a dermatologist to get a clear diagnosis before trying to treat it.

Speaking of treating it, Bieber also shared what she personally does during a flare-up. She rinses her face with water, and uses prescription azelaic acid (known for its effectiveness on acne and rosacea), hypochlorous acid (essentially a skin-safe disinfectant), clindamycin (an antibiotic), and her own Rhode Glazing Milk for light, calming moisture.

Because different things trigger perioral dermatitis in different people, prevention and treatment often comes down to a lot of trial and error. But as frustrating as that may be, it's always nice to know you're in very good, very candid company with someone like Hailey Bieber.
