According to Hong Kong Free Press, she met the man, who claimed to be a lawyer in his late 20s, on Telegram about a year ago.
On August 29, the pair visited Chinese restaurant Man Wah, which is located in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong's Central district.
He ordered two Man Wah Premium Set Dinners, each priced at HK$2,388 (S$394), along with a bottle of 2002 Krug Clos d’Ambonnay champagne worth HK$71,800 (S$11,800).
We’re not sure why she agreed to the lavish meal — perhaps she thought it was a special treat. But when dinner ended, the man excused himself to the loo and, surprise surprise, never returned She attempted to reach him but he was MIA, and she had to call her friends for help to cover the HK$84.4K (S$13.9K) bill. She filed a police report that night, and a photo of the receipt has since gone viral.
At first, the woman lodged a report suspecting she had been scammed, and the case was logged as ‘fraud’. It was later reclassified as a ‘request for police assistance’ after she clarified she only wanted the incident officially recorded However, the next day, she formally reported the matter at the Central Police Station.
The official report lead to the arrest of a 23-year-old man surnamed Wong in Tseung Kwan O. According to Hong Kong media Sing Tao Daily, Wong called the hotel before the date to confirm the availability of that particular bottle of champagne. Was he just eyeing the wine and looking for someone to pay for it? It was also reported that Wong worked as a community outreach officer for a political party.
According to court records, he was also jailed two years and nine months for procuring an unlawful sexual act by threats in September 2023.
