He Slept Naked. An Ant Gave Him Painful Blisters

Earlier this week, local comedian Jaspers Lai took to Facebook to share that he had been unexpectedly “attacked” by a charlie ant.

For the uninitiated, a charlie ant is a type of rove beetle that doesn’t actually bite or sting. Instead, it releases a potent toxin called pederin, which can cause severe, painful rashes and blisters if the insect is crushed against the skin.

“People who like to sleep without clothes, pay attention. Don’t end up like me… it hurts so much!,” exclaimed the 38-year-old actor.

Jaspers shared that he woke up one morning to find his arm covered in ulcerated, pus-filled wounds.

Initially, he suspected it might be shingles — but ruled that out after reading comments from netizens who pointed out the telltale signs of a charlie ant reaction.

That’s when he realised the injuries were caused by contact with the beetle.

As the wounds on his arm and chest were in almost identical spots, Jaspers speculated that he may have felt itchy in his sleep and instinctively slapped the area.

In doing so, he likely crushed the beetle against his skin, causing the toxin to spread and trigger a severe skin reaction.
