He Was One Of Asia’s Biggest Idols But His Wife Says She Never Really Thought Of Him As A Heartthrob

Marrying one of Asia’s most famous heartthrobs sounds like the stuff of fan fiction.

But according to actress Reen Yu, life with former F4 member Vic Chou is a lot more ordinary than people might imagine.

The 38-year-old actress recently announced that she will be making her long-awaited return to showbiz after stepping away from the spotlight for a decade.

Reen and Vic first met in 2008 while filming the Taiwanese drama Black & White. They tied the knot in 2015 and welcomed their daughter, affectionately nicknamed "Little Trumpet", the following year.

Since then, Reen has largely devoted herself to family life, focusing on raising their now nine-year-old daughter.

Looking back, she revealed that her hiatus wasn't exactly planned.

Shortly after getting married, she became pregnant and, unable to find a suitable nanny, made the decision to put her career on hold and care for her child herself.

"One year led to another. Since I made the choice and my husband also felt he could be the one working while I stayed at home, I gradually came to accept that arrangement," she shared.

Now that their daughter is older, however, Reen is ready to step back into the spotlight.

And despite what some people might assume, Vic has been nothing but supportive.

Over the years, she said she had received numerous invitations to return to acting, but one question kept popping up.

"I remember thinking: 'Do I really need my husband's permission for this?' But at the time, our child was still very young," she said.

"This time, I decided to make a comeback, told him about it, and he just had to accept it," she laughed.

According to Reen, Vic's reaction was simple — he merely asked what she wanted to do next.

Of course, for many people, the bigger question isn't about her career comeback.

It's what life is actually like when your husband is Vic Chou.

After all, the Meteor Garden star spent much of the 2000s being regarded as one of Asia's ultimate heartthrobs.

So what's it like waking up next to him every morning?

Reen couldn't resist teasing the interviewer.

"I don't exactly wake up to see him every day lah," she laughed, explaining that the first person she usually sees each morning is their daughter.

She also made it clear that life at home looks very different from magazine covers and red carpets.

"You don't seriously think he sits around at home with his hair perfectly styled when he's not working, do you? As for how he smells, probably just like body wash."

As for whether she ever gets starstruck by her husband's famous looks, Reen insists that was never what attracted her in the first place.

"He's very talented, okay? I didn't get together with him because of his appearance, so I never really thought of him as a heartthrob," she said.

That answer, however, earned her some pushback from friends.

According to Reen, one friend jokingly accused her of humble-bragging because "Vic is just so undeniably handsome".

"Then I thought: 'Okay, he really is handsome'. But it's simply that I like him, and he happens to be very good-looking," she explained.

And for anyone wondering whether the famously private actor is difficult to live with?

Reen quickly shut that down too.

"If that were the case, I wouldn't have married him in the first place. But he does have his moments when he's very serious," she chuckled.
