High school holds a special place in my heart, and my years at SMJK Yuk Choy, in Ipoh, were some of the most formative of my life.
This school, with its unique blend of tradition and modernity, became the backdrop for my personal growth, learning, and unforgettable experiences.
Looking back, I realise that it wasn't just a place of academic learning; it was where I made lifelong friends, encountered challenges, and discovered more about who I was and who I wanted to become.
The first day of high school was a whirlwind of excitement and nerves. I remember stepping onto the grounds of the school, which is renowned for its strong academic reputation and diverse student body.
I had high expectations but, at the same time, I felt overwhelmed by the unfamiliar faces, the vast campus, and the busy, bustling atmosphere. It was a place filled with people I didn't know, and I wasn’t sure where or how I'd fit in.
My first impression of the school was that it was a place where everyone had a clear sense of purpose. The students were focused, determined, and proud of their school. The teachers, too, seemed dedicated to providing the best education possible.
I remember feeling like I was standing at the beginning of a long journey, unsure of what the future held but certain that this was the place where my high school years would unfold.
One of the defining features of my high school experience was the teachers. Each of them left an impression on me, not only because of their subject knowledge but also because of the way they shaped our thinking and character.
My favourite vice principal, Mr Teh, was a remarkable leader who always led by example. He was fair, approachable, and genuinely cared about the students' well-being. Whether addressing school matters or helping us through challenges, Mr Teh’s calm demeanour and thoughtful advice were always appreciated. He encouraged us to strive for excellence while maintaining a sense of discipline. His support and dedication made him not just a vice principal but a mentor and role model for many of us.
Then there was Puan Sim, my favourite Chemistry teacher, who made every lesson both engaging and insightful. She had an exceptional way of explaining complex topics in a clear and understandable manner. Her enthusiasm for Chemistry was contagious, and she always found creative ways to make the subject come alive, whether through experiments, real-life examples, or simple analogies.
Puan Sim was patient and kind, always encouraging us to ask questions and think critically. Her passion and dedication made her one of the most memorable teachers I've ever had.
One of the greatest gifts of my time at SMJK Yuk Choy was the friendships I formed. High school is a time when we find our tribe, and I was fortunate to meet a group of friends who became my second family. We were a diverse group – different backgrounds, interests, and personalities – but we shared a common bond: We all wanted to do our best, support each other, and have fun along the way.
We spent countless hours studying together, sharing notes, and discussing homework. But more importantly, we laughed, argued, and created memories that would last a lifetime. Whether it was during a long break between classes or the late-night study sessions before exams, these friends made the stressful moments more bearable and the fun moments even more enjoyable.
Like any high school experience, mine was not without its challenges. The pressure to perform academically was constant, especially with the rigorous curriculum. The school’s emphasis on discipline and excellence pushed us to our limits, and there were times when I struggled to keep up. I still remember the anxiety before major exams like the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia), where I felt like the weight of my future was riding on my results.
But it was during these stressful moments that I learned the most about myself. The late nights, the sacrifices, and the persistence paid off in ways that weren’t always immediately visible. I also learned to appreciate the importance of balance. It was not enough to just study; I had to take care of my mental health, maintain a support system, and allow myself time to recharge.
SMJK Yuk Choy also offered a rich variety of extracurricular activities, which became an important part of my high school life. Whether it was joining the school’s debate team, participating in cultural events, or being involved in community service, these activities helped me develop skills that went far beyond the academic realm.
I was part of the school’s sports team, which not only kept me fit but also taught me teamwork, discipline and leadership. It was during our sports events, especially during inter-school competitions, that I realised how much I enjoyed working with others towards a common goal.
Looking back, my years at SMJK Yuk Choy were transformative. It was a time of self-discovery, growth and learning. The school’s emphasis on academic excellence, coupled with a vibrant community of students and teachers, created an environment where I could thrive, not just as a student but as a person.
The memories I made – whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or during late-night study sessions – will always be a part of me. And as I move forward in life, I carry with me the lessons learned, the friendships formed, and the experiences that helped shape who I am today.
