Heavy rain triggers flash floods in various parts of Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Several parts of the state were hit by flash floods following a heavy downpour since 4am today.

The situation was made worse by the high tide in some areas.

Among the affected areas on the island were Teluk Bahang, Bayan Baru, Bayan Lepas and Relau.

Taman Inderawasih and Taman Chai Leng on the mainland were also affected.

Many photos and video footage were shared on social media since the morning.

Rini Haryanie took to social media to say that even Relau was flooded since 6am.

"Cars couldn't pass through.

"The drain in front of the school is big enough already. If they don't upgrade or improve the drainage, the water won't be able to flow out in time," she said.

Abdul Latiff Abdul Ghani said almost the entire factory area in Kampung Jawa was flooded.

"I got stuck too earlier on the way to work," he added.

The flood waters have since receded.
