Her 1st Date With Husband Was At A Hawker Centre — "I Love That"

We've heard plenty of dating app horror stories, but once in a while, some people do find their happy ever afters there.

Just like Mediacorp actress Sheila Sim.

In the new Mediacorp drama Keep It Down, the 42-year-old plays Shi Jia, the boss of a pottery studio. Shi Jia is hopelessly romantic, emotional, and eagerly yearns for a loving marriage.

While Shi Jia is pretty reckless in love, it appears Sheila is quite the opposite in real life.

She is really cautious, even when she first met her husband, Deon Woo.

As we already know, the actress met the bank executive and credit specialist on a dating app in 2016. They got married in 2018 and now have two daughters — Layla, six, and Skyla, three.

While she preferred to not say which dating app it was, Sheila candidly exclaimed to 8days.sg that she had swiped on "so many" guys before eventually landing on Deon's profile back then.

"You know it's very hard to find the right fish in a big pond?" she quipped. "So it took me quite some time."

So what was it about Deon's profile that made Sheila swipe right?

"He used his full name, that's actually quite rare on a dating app," she explained. "With that full name, I was able to do my background checks."

"That was when I saw a lot of his photos, who his friends and family were, and that was how I decided: 'Okay, I think this guy looks pretty decent'."

The actress also admitted that "of course [she has] to stalk everybody" after they match.

But here's an interesting fact: Sheila, who only used a part of her real name for her profile, didn't like it when people recognised her.

"There were a few who sent me a direct message right away after we've matched, asking: 'Oh, are you Sheila Sim?'. Right away I unmatched those," she revealed.

The actress and Deon eventually met in person five days after matching, which she said was "record time" for her.

"But I love that we met at a hawker centre in the afternoon. For me, I wanted to make it more casual and not like a proper date," recalled Sheila.

"In case he's weird or something, then the escape plan is very easy at a hawker centre."

But as we can all tell, Deon surely was not weird at all, and the couple moved on to the next level very soon after.

"We dated for three months and he got a ring. Six months later, he proposed," she said, adding that she was indeed surprised when he popped the question.

That said, Sheila, who had a few relationships before Deon, was at the age where she figured that the duration of a relationship does not determine whether two people will end up together forever.

"It's important for two people to come together with the right mindset, because we knew that we wanted to get married," she said.

"If in the process of talking, I realised he's not ready for marriage, or I wasn't, I don't think we would have continued the conversation."

When asked for a specific moment when she decided Deon was the right one for her, Sheila singled out one of their trips, where they climbed Mount Rinjani in Indonesia.

"When we got to the summit, it was freezing cold. I thought he was very sweet 'cos he pulled his back along as he climbed up, but he took off his jacket and gave it to me," recalled Sheila.

"He was making sure I was okay the whole time," she added.
