Herry admits Indians steadier as Aaron-Wooi Yik stumble
PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are known for their reputation to shine at major tournaments but it was just not their day in the City of Lights on Friday.
Men's doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi could not hide his disappointment after seeing Aaron-Wooi Yik fall to India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty 12-21, 19-21 in the World Championships last eight at the Adidas Arena in Port de la Chapelle in Paris on Friday.
World No. 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik held a 11-3 head-to-head record over Satwiksairaj-Chirag, beating them in both their encounters this year in the Singapore Open in June and China Open last month but could not lift their game this time and went down in 43 minutes.
The defeat ended the 2022 world champion's dream of capturing the title again.
It was Aaron-Wooi Yik's only blemish in what could have been described as a good year, having ending an 18-year wait for the Asian Championships title, and winning the Opens in Singapore and Thailand.
Herry acknowleged that the Indians were better on the day.
"Aaron-Wooi Yik could not play their normal game. We have to admit that the Indians played well," said Herry.
"The quality of their attacks were good and they rarely made mistakes. Aaron-Wooi Yik on the other hand made many errors in their defense."
Aaron-Wooi Yik were trailing 11-17 in the second game and did well to mount a fightback and draw level at 19-19 but Satwiksairaj-Chirag steadied themselves in time to claim the win.
It was the 2022 Asian Games champion's first victory over Aaron-Wooi Yik since beating them in last year's Indian Open semi-finals.
The defeat meant that Aaron-Wooi Yik bid for a third consecutive medal in the world meet ended after they had added a bronze in 2023 in Copenhagen to their title win in 2022.
Overall, it was a disappointing campaign for Malaysia's men's doubles after world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun also lost in the quarter-finals to South Korea's world No. 1 Seo Seung-jae-Kim Won-ho 21-23, 23-21, 15-21.
Debutants Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi lost to Aaron-Wooi Yik in the third round while world No. 3 independent duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani crashed out in the last 16 too.
