How Jennifer Lawrence Reacted to Dakota Johnson's Cannes Surprise
Dakota Johnson's playbook for the Cannes Film Festival came with a surprising start.
As the actress arrived at the prestigious event in France for her upcoming film Splitsville, she stopped to see an old friend before anything else.
"The first thing I did when I got to Cannes on Saturday," Dakota told Vogue in a May 21 interview, "I went and surprised Jennifer Lawrenceat her after-party for her movie."
After all, the Oscar winner has been celebrating in her own right after receiving a standing ovation for her film Die, My Love at the festival.
"She was like, 'Stop following me!'" Dakota teased of their interaction. "That's why I'm here."
Seeing a familiar face ahead of Cannes was a respite for the 50 Shades of Grey actress, who had never attended.
"It's fun to have a movie here that I produced," she said, adding, "It would suck if people didn't like it, but that happens and you move on quickly."
As the 35-year-old continued to get her makeup and hair done ahead of the red carpet during the interview, she mentally prepared to be the center of attention during her screening.
"Nicole Kidman gave a really wonderful speech and she looked like she wasn't nervous at all, which is amazing because I get so nervous speaking on stage," she admitted. "It's a cartoon, my knees wobble."
Indeed, Nicole, 57, dazzled as she pushed back against ageism in Hollywood while accepting the Kering Women in Motion award May 18 during the fashion brand's gala.
"I had been having a conversation with Meryl Streep, where we talked about how we have to actually do the work—which is be in films directed by women," the Baby Girl star said, per Variety. "We need to give women better roles, particularly as they get older. We are here, and we can prove to you that we will make money for you."
"Invest in us and believe in us, because our voices are so important," she continued. "We will help change the world, but we will also give you a glimpse of our hearts and our souls and what it means to be a woman. If you just give us the chance, we are so ready."
