How Phylicia Rashad Honored TV Son Malcolm-Jamal Warner at Emmys 2025 After His Death
Phylicia Rashad is honoring her TV son.
The actress made an appearance during the 2025 Emmys in Los Angeles Sept. 14 to introduce the ceremony’s “In Memoriam” segment, which began with a tribute to her late Cosby Show costar Malcolm-Jamal Warner.
“He was a beloved teenager in an iconic television series who the world watched grow into manhood,” Rashad began. “And like all our friends and colleagues who transitioned this past year, Malcolm-Jamal Warner remains in our hearts.”
“We remember them, not just for their immense talent, but also for the way they made us believe in something bigger, the best that is within us,” she continued. “And even though they may no longer be here with us, we can all smile knowing that their impact will remain, knowing that their lasting impressions will continue to live on through story, knowing that they touched our lives.”
The segment, which featured Vince Gill and Lainey Wilson performing a duet of his 1995 single “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” also highlighted the losses of other stars who contributed to the television industry, including Anne Burrell, Michelle Trachtenberg, John Amos and Ozzy Osbourne.
Days before the ceremony, Warner’s wife Tenisha Warner—with whom he shared an 8-year-old daughter whose name has not been shared publicly—broke her silence on his passing after he drowned in a rip current in Costa Rica at age 54.
“Thank you for holding us in so much love during this tender time,” she wrote in a post on Instagram Sept. 12. “I can still hear my husband’s laugh, still feel the way he made room for every part of me—every tear, every dream.”
Tenisha also shared her and her daughter’s commitment to keeping the actor’s legacy alive, announcing the establishment of The Warner Family Foundation.
“Together we carry the legacy my husband and I began,” she continued, “one that nurtures children’s inner light and gives young artists the freedom to create outside the lines. This is love, still moving. Still making. Still carrying us forward.”
