How Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick Are Helping Their Son James With Acting Career
And just like that, Sarah Jessica Parker’s son is all grown up.
As the Sex and the Citystar’s eldest James Wilkie, 22, embarks on his acting career, she shared that she and husband Matthew Broderick “give advice specific to conversations” that their son approaches them about.
“I really want my children to be educated in the ways that are fulfilling to them,” Sarah Jessica exclusively shared on The E! News Sitdown With Bruce Bozzi, an E! News segment airing May 28 at 11 p.m. “I don’t think that there is one way to be an educated person or to be equipped to be an adult and try to fashion a life for yourself after what would be considered ‘finishing college’—let’s say 22 years old.”
The Hocus Pocus star—who also shares twin daughters Tabitha Hodge and Marion Loretta Elwell, 15, with Matthew—explained that she ultimately wants her kids to be happy in their endeavors, acting or otherwise.
“You want for them to be pursuing things that are exciting and challenging and hard and gratifying and to be able to ultimately take care of themselves, support themselves—emotionally, financially,” she continued, “and that they can be in the world and be a reliable person to themselves and to other people. And so we talk about work like that.”
Sarah Jessica—who stars in the third season of And Just Like Thatstarting May 29—added, “I'm curious to see what they all do, but I hope that they feel—I hope all young people feel—to some degree, that they have choices and that there isn't one way.”
And while James has chosen to become an actor, it seems that his sisters are taking their mom’s advice and keeping their options open, according to Matthew.
“One of them definitely is not, she says, right now,” the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off star told E! News last month about his daughters pursuing acting, “but I don’t think so.”
Meanwhile, Matthew and James have already shared the screen, appearing together in a February episode of the CBS series Elsbeth.
“It was great. We had two days together,” the Tony Award winner continued. “It was really fun to hang around the craft service table and eat snacks. He was nervous but he got over that. We had a great couple of days.”
