Hugo Weaving has said there is ‘no way’ he will reprise his role as Elrond in Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel series.

The much-touted TV adaption will act as a precursor to Peter Jackson’s acclaimed movie trilogy, taking place during the Second Age of JRR Tolkein’s Middle Earth.

Its setting means that many of the franchise’s characters – from Ian McKellen’s Gandalf to Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel – could make an appearance as their younger-selves, before the War of the Ring against the Dark Lord Sauron.

But one figure who won’t be making an appearance in his original form is Elvish lord Elrond, played in the original and Hobbit trilogies by The Matrix actor Hugo Weaving.

Speaking to Variety, the star was pretty strong in the answer to whether he was gearing up for a return to Middle Earth. Basically, it was a big Elvish no.

‘Matrix might have happened,’ he explained, ‘but Lord of the Rings, no, I would never — I’m not interested in that at all.

‘Look, I loved being in New Zealand with all those great people, and it was like going back to a family but actually, to be honest, I think everyone had more than enough of it.’
