Few things stop you in your tracks quite like a devastating spill, so when I dropped a nearly-full jar of crispy chili oil on my new kitchen rug, I thought it was done for, and that I was doomed. Luckily, my mom was visiting, and she ran to Target to pick up a bottle of Folex — a carpet and upholstery cleaner with legions of devoted fans. I am pleased (and truly shocked) to report that the next day, the rug was as good as new.

Folex is a water-based, multi-surface stain remover formulated without harsh chemicals, delivering instant results without rinsing. You simply spray the stain and use a bit of elbow grease to scrub it out with a clean cloth. It’s that easy. It’s a must for parents, people with pets, the accident-prone and even people who like to host parties — you never know when a glass or red wine will go flying!

Directly after spilling the chili oil, I poured baby powder over it to try to draw out as much of the oil as possible. Before doing this, it was incredibly slimy and chunky, but after letting the baby powder sit for a while and vacuuming it up, the situation seemed more manageable. My mom and I immediately got to work spraying and scrubbing the affected area.

The difference after our first spray-and-scrub session was noticeable and gave us hope that the rug could be salvaged. For our second go-around, we decided to let the solution sit on the stain for about ten minutes before we resumed agitating it with new, clean cloths. Much to our shock, the stain was nearly gone after another five minutes of powerful (on my mom’s end) scrubbing.

With the clock ticking before my wife got home from work, we gave it a final (thoroughly drenching) spray, let it sit for 15 minutes and then scrubbed like our lives depended on it. Some of the stitching and fabric came loose in the process, but it was worth it. For the piece de resistance, we put clean cloths over the wet area, put on boots and stomped on it, soaking up any remaining cleaning spray and lifting the stain along with it. The result? A kitchen rag rug that was as good as new.

It took a couple of days to fully dry out, and then I dutifully tucked in and re-weaved all the pieces of fabric that had come undone back in and added a few more stitches here and there for good measure. It slightly changed the pattern of the rug, but it was well worth it. You’d never know it had experienced such a devastating spill. While the process took a fair amount of elbow grease, I feel fairly confident that we wouldn’t have been successful with a different carpet cleaner. The vibrant orange oil stain was no match for Folex.

Since then, I’ve used the spray on other, less catastrophic stains, like smaller food stains on my son’s clothing or dirt that he’s tracked onto the couch cushions. They’ve come out quickly and easily, and best of all, it never leaves behind a funky smell. I can rest easy knowing it won’t irritate my toddler’s skin or give us a headache.

It is truly the fastest working, most effective stain remover I have ever come across. It’s more than earned its spot in my cleaning rotation, and I’ll never be without a bottle again. I’m not the only one devoted to Folex, take a look below at what reviewers at Amazon have to say about it, then pick up a bottle (or two) for yourself.

Promising reviews:

“This is one of the first carpet spot cleaners I have used that actually works. Gets rid of marker, dirt, blood, sauce, wine, vomit. All the things life throws at you. Takes a bit to dry but that’s a small price to pay. No weird smell! 10/10 product!” —Great Finds Think Alike

“There is no better product than this for carpet cleaners. This is the best carpet cleaner ever. It literally makes stains disappear. I have tried many different brands and this is the best one. It really does a good job on the carpet, especially when you have animals who vomit and have pee accidents” —Patricia Nelson

“Folex is seriously the best. I’ve used it on so many random stains, and it has worked every time. The biggest test was red wine, and it actually got it out, which felt like a miracle. It’s easy to use, doesn’t have a strong annoying smell, and I like having it around the house because with kids, spills and stains are basically constant. This is one of those products I’ll always keep stocked.” —Meghan M.

“This literally is the only thing to get out stains! I used it on literally everything!! Car, house, rugs, clothes! It’s a miracle! Purchased several times!” —Heather M.

“Best stain remover ever. It’s amazing just how little effort you have to put in to clean up stains. It’s a big bottle so I don’t see it running out anytime soon. It drys up fast and has no strong smell to it. Love this stuff and I’ve used it on my white couch when someone got chocolate on it. Theirs no sign that chocolate was ever stained on there.” —Mulenga

“Gets ALL stains out. I use folex on stains for our clothes. Just have to rub it with my finger to agitate it a bit...then it dries and goes away by itself. Or I can throw it in the washer and it comes right out! Love this stuff!!!!” —Dawn King

“Cautious optimism/leap of faith rewarded as puppy puke and diarrhea stains on expensive beige carpet disappeared - TOTALLY. Sprayed onto the 2-day-old, dark orange-y stains (not reported at time of incidents!), daubed as directed and within 2 hours, stains GONE! No residue or odors. Color me shocked and celebrating this miracle product. Now, I always keep a bottle on hand. Works on white floor tile grout, too.” —Amazon Customer

“This stuff is a miracle worker. We have an old dog and accidents happen. Our carpet steamer/cleaner gets out most of it but sometimes a weird color still shows on the carpet. I spray the flex spit remover on and use the microfiber cloth that came with it to scrub at the spot and the color is gone within a minute or two. I don’t know what magic is in this but it’s amazing! Must have for people with pets and/or small children.” —Michael Zoll
