As a Deputy Editorial Director for BuzzFeed’s shopping team, I love to get into the weeds of why a product’s worth the money by deep diving into customer reviews, and product-testing as much as possible.

Transforming the room where your bed resides into an absolute sanctuary doesn't require a whole bunch of complicated projects or money. There are tons of little hacks and upgrades you can pull off to make your bedroom look *and* feel nicer, from touching up your scratched-up headboard with a furniture marker to swapping your lamp's bulb for a smart-enabled one you can turn off from your phone after you've snuggled under your covers. You can do these!

1. Swap your overhead or table lamp bulbs for a pair of LED stained glass bulbs if you wanna dial the whimsy up to 1,000. What a lovely alternative for a plain white box if you don't want to bother painting!

www.amazon.com, www.amazon.com

Promising review: "I love these bulbs. They make any room all warm and cozy. Also a fantastic night-light for the little ones. :) Get you some!" —Amazon Customer

Get them from Amazon for $18.76+ (available in three styles).

2. Add a non-overhead light source that is THE moment like this glossy glass lamp, a bendy lamp, or even a traditional shade with a non-traditional base. You can't remove that unsightly boob light but you *can* express some of your personal taste through a fun table lamp!

www.amazon.com, www.amazon.com, www.amazon.com

Promising review (for the glass lamp): "It's real glass – not plastic! Really happy with the quality. It has an actual socket for a candelabra bulb(not included) so you can replace the bulb, unlike the numerous built-in LED lamps sold everywhere." —Alyson Moy

Promising review (for the bendy lamp): "Easy to set up. Looks great in the house. Kids love it." —C. Wholberg

Promising review (for the traditional lamp): "Super cute and funky lamp. Easy to put together. Perfect for my little girl's bedroom." —Ren DeCan

Get them from Amazon: glass lamp for $38.99 (available in five colors), bendy lamp for $26.99, or non-traditional base for $45.99 (available in five colors).

3. Or if you want to zhuzh up a boring lamp shade, drape a dramatic necklace on it like I did for mine or add a bunch of brooches to a plain shade like one TikToker did

Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed

I grabbed this necklace at an antique shop in Palm Springs from a decommissioned ~secret~ society without plans on how to use it, but it found a home on this neutral lampshade!

If you love the brooches idea but don't have any lying around, here's a pack of 16 from Amazon for $23.99. If your lampshade is flat, this could work with enamel pins, though know that once you use this trick there's really no going back with that holey lampshade.

4. Hang decorative tassels from lampshades, furniture pulls, doorknobs, wherever you could use a little jazzing up on the cheap.

www.amazon.com, www.amazon.com

One reviewer was able to dye the tassels to match a costume, so that's a possibility to match your vision!

Promising review: "These tassels are very nice. So nice that I immediately purchased another pair. They are made of a silky yarn that is very soft to the touch. The ratio of red to gold is well-balanced, giving it an elegant and sophisticated look. They're not too heavy, but the perfect weight to hang without easily moving around. I would say the price is very reasonable. I did say I purchased a second pair! I think they'll last for a long time." —Amazon Customer

Get two from Amazon for $12.96 (available in 11 colors).

If these are too pricey, there are lots of smaller, similar tassels for cheaper on Amazon.

5. There are tons of ways to bring some character to your walls without painting, like putting up lighted curtains you can layer with some sheer curtains for an ethereal look.

Amazon, www.amazon.com

Get them from Amazon: 300-LED light curtain for $14.99 and sheer curtains for $8.99+ (available in several colors and lengths)

And if you're looking for something slightly different check out these string lights with photo clips.

6. Frame non-art things as pieces of artwork, like a coaster from your favorite restaraunt, your expired passport, or even a ticket from something special!

Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed

This beaut is a tiny leather book I bought at a flea market maybe a decade ago of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner that I thought was so cool, but I didn't really have any use for. So I framed it a few years ago and added it to my eclectic gallery wall above my couch. It isn't exactly evenly spaced in the frame, but I think that just adds to the charm? I just got a new passport and plan on framing my old one to an open page with the most stamps once I find a frame I like. Also, check out this TikToker's gallery wall of framed coasters for further inspo!

I used a plain spare frame I had lying around for this DIY, but you can grab two 3"x5" plain ones from Amazon for $6.99.

7. Install wall art with Command strips made specifically for the task. This version is made to hold up to 16 pounds, and is easy to peel off the wall when it's time to move or you want to rearrange a gallery wall.

www.amazon.com, www.amazon.com

I've used these for most of my wall art, and when you (as the reviewer mentions) wait for the Command strip to adhere to the wall per the directions, it really can hold! Also, make sure to follow the directions on *where* to place the strips when it comes to whatever you're hanging up, because that matters a lot too. Like with all wall art installation, I rec using a level to make sure your art is even, because unlike with a nail, it's harder to tilt and adjust once the strip is in place.

Promising review: "Used these to hang a ton of pictures in our new mountain retreat. These worked great. Used them for both heavy and lighter photos. A little pricier than a nail, but I love the ease of removal, and it makes it easier to get them hung level. We followed the instructions and waited 24 hours to put the pictures up." —AmazonUtah

Get 14 pairs from Amazon for $12.25.

8. Mask the ugly existing blinds with some NoNo Brackets, aka curtain rod brackets that fit onto your existing blinds without drilling any holes and and spackling them later.

www.amazon.com

Promising review: "This bracket is awesome and was extremely easy to install. We were able to hang curtains over our vertical blinds in just a few minutes and didn't even need any tools. Great product!!!" —Amazon Customer

Get a set of two from Amazon for $19.95 (also available in brownblackgold, and brass, and also available in inside-mount brackets).

9. And if you're putting up some curtains, a set of room-darkening velvet curtains are a dramatic (except to your wallet) option!

www.amazon.com

Promising review: "Purchased these for my studio, which is in an old mill. I wanted them for their insulating properties more than to block out the light because my studio loses a lot of heat at night due to its enormous windows. The curtains/drapes work great for both — I am especially pleased with how well they help keep the space from losing heat! Before having the curtains the space would lose about 8 degrees in temperature overnight (which in the winter is a significant amount, especially in the northeast). Now, with the curtains, the space no longer loses heat overnight! It is now so nice to go into my studio in the morning and find it still toasty warm!" —Noname

Get them from Amazon for $21.99+ (available in four sizes and eight colors).

10. And consider some cordless, no-drill Roman shades that'll be a breeze to install — and especially great if you're in a rental where you can't or are at least trying to limit drilling into the wall.

www.amazon.com, www.amazon.com

Promising review: "I knew I wanted something to finish off my bench seat windows. These blinds were not only easy to install, but I am impressed with the quality and how easy it is to raise and lower them. I think all four were out of the box and installed in 15 minutes. Offers light filtering, which is perfect for my needs. If I want to take them down for my holiday garland, it will be super easy to remove and put back up after the holiday." —doug huntley

Get each panel from Amazon for $43.30+ (available in 10 styles and a range of sizes).

11. Get a night-light for your bed that'll make you feel like you're staying at a fancy hotel as you step around that pile of clothes that fell off "the chair" in the middle of the night.

www.amazon.com, www.amazon.com

Promising review: "Great light strip. The motion sensor has a good range and then controls for time on and brightness are wonderful. The 3M tape on the back could be stronger, but for the price and motion sensor it is a great buy. Also we have this plugged into a smart outlet so that it only turns on during certain hours of the day. That plus the feature that is there is enough ambient light, the motion sensor doesn't trigger makes this on par with systems that are far more expensive. Works great with Google home as well because of the linked smart plug. Very happy with the purchase. Would be 4.5 stars just because of the tape not being sticky enough, but they do provide a second roll in the box, which helps." —AC

Get it from Amazon for $17.99.

12. And get more creative with some rechargeable motion sensor under-cabinet lights you can place *just* where you want to illuminate things in places like under your closet, desk, or even by your door so you can scurry off to the bathroom at 3 a.m.

www.amazon.com

These have a built-in magnet that'll stick on most metals, or you can use the included adhesive tape to tape them onto an existing surface.

Promising review: "My dorm is super super dark, and my closet is no exception. These were able to be placed on the sides of my door frame and were super easy to assemble. I would absolutely recommend!!" —J. Morse

Get it from Amazon for $19.78+ (available in two sizes and in warm or white light).

13. Treat light switches like an artistic op with a refined-looking frame. (This is an easy swap as long as you didn't get the landlord special where they painted *over* the light switch and outlet plates.)

Chelsea Stuart / BuzzFeed

Promising review: "These are absolutely beautiful! If I ever move, I'm taking them with me. You may think they're a little pricey, but they're REALLY heavy and far nicer than the stuff you find at the local hardware store. I bought the switch plate, outlet plates, and even a blank plate to cover an old electrical box left behind by DIRECTV." —Karebow

Get it from Amazon for $30 (available in seven finishes)

14. Realize your childhood dreams of a canopied bed with some DIY, either with a ringed canopy you can hang from one ceiling hook, a canopy you can hang from several hooks, or a curtain rod DIY from one TikToker. I didn't realize I was in a royal's bed chamber!

www.amazon.com, www.amazon.com

Promising review (for the left): "This is a queen-size bed, and it can literally cover the entire outside of the bed if I wanted to. Easy to install. Took less than 10 minutes (probably would have been shorter if I wasn’t installing on a beanbag and a pile of pillows). Would recommend it to all my friends. My sister ever bought one for her daughter." —Mandy

Promising review (for the right): "UGH I FEEL LIKE A PRINCESS!! Love this net, easy to put up. Good quality and comes with bows! The lights can be battery-powered or plugged in. My friends have complimented it and find it very cozy. I also have autism, and this gives me great comfort!" —Meow

Get them from Amazon: single hook for $14.99 (available in six colors) or several hooks for $24.51+ (available in seven colors).

15. Create some light play with some iridescent window film that'll provide some privacy and still let in SO much light. No need to worry about your nosey neighbor across the way peeking in on you while you devour a box of Girl Scout cookies on your bed.

www.amazon.com

Promising review: "I have a weird skinny window in my house where no normal window covering works. People walking on our community trail can see up into our upstairs bathroom when the light is on and it's dark outside. Not a good plan at all. So I used this window film and cut different-sized circles and placed then on this window to interrupt the view into the house. Worked perfectly! Very easy to use." —Marsgard

Get it from Amazon for $9.98+ (available in six sizes).

16. Or turn glass doors on an old piece of furniture into design-y hidden storage with some colorful window film. Just because it's YOUR room doesn't mean that you want to peek into the cabinet where you shove all kinds of stuff to get it up and off the floor.

www.amazon.com

Promising review: "Great product! I wanted to upscale my cabinet and hide the items stored in it, and this was the perfect solution. It comes with everything you need to install i,t and it's a breeze to install. Light comes through beautifully, and I love that it has texture, which makes it look amazing. No hassle whatsoever. Promising review: "These are so much fun! We ordered the small size, which fits standard hardback books (approximately five to seven hardbacks in my experience). They're a great way to add some extra storage to our very small home, and we've placed them in our hallway so people ask us about them all the time. I'd highly recommend!" —LaBuenaVidaMere

Get three from Amazon for $45 (available in different sets).

19. Embrace a faux green thumb without having to recruit someone to water your plants while you're on a cruise by investing in a 5-foot-tall faux bird of paradise plant or embrace the full-on faux with a vine with smart lights you can position in all kinds of ways on your wall.

www.amazon.com, www.amazon.com

Promising review (for the plant): "I had a live Bird of Paradise which I loved but it did not get enough light or warmth in my home. I decided to look for an artificial one. After lots of research and choices, I chose this one. It came with the leaves off. They were easily connected to each branch. The leaves and branches are bendable, which helps to make it even more realistic. I used my pot, I had my live one in, and topped it off with some of the leftover soil. Now I can enjoy my favorite plant without worrying about how to keep it alive. I highly recommend!" —HC

Promising review (for the vine): "Take your time and mock up branches with painters tape. Then replace the tape with mini Command hooks. We just use a timer to turn in and off daily. Very pleased with this!!" —Marc

www.amazon.com, www.amazon.com

Every single one of the candles works perfectly and the flame flickers just like a real candle. They were really easy to put up into the ceiling because they were already strong with the fishing line. I just used clear thumbtacks and wrapped the line around it and hung it to the ceiling. The wand is so cool and works perfectly well for turning on and off the lights. I definitely would purchase more to add a little bit more magic throughout the house! Absolutely worth it!" —Korg

Overall happy with them!" —Amazon Customer

26. Hang a statement pendant light or gorgeous mini chandelier with a conversion kit if you wrinkle your nose at minimalist recessed lighting.

What the heck, I thought! Rewatched the video before installation, looked at the directions on both the converter kit and the pendant light, gathered the necessary tools described in all instructions, and set upon my mission. The hardest part (for me) was getting the self-tapping screws started. I'm pretty pleased with the outcome, I must say! By the way, I'm a 55-year-old female who has worked at a bank all of my life. Promising review: "My home was generally too hot in the summer and a bit cooler than I liked in the winter. Now, with this product, the entire house is much more balanced — upstairs and downstairs. In the winter, after my HVAC system shuts off, the unit continues to run as long as the duct continues to put out heat. In the summer, the unit puts out cold air upstairs even though the HVAC system is off, making upstairs bedrooms very, very comfortable for an afternoon nap. Setup is not difficult. Best of all, my energy bill went down. I was concerned that it would go up since these units are plugged into a receptacle, but the units appear to be 12- or 24-volt units (low amperage). Bottom line, an outstanding product that I feel is well worth the money I spent." —Sharon

"Installing" it (installing makes it seem way more involved than it is) took all of 10 minutes and that includes removing it from the box, Command Strip-ing the ring to the ceiling, and then popping the magnetic shade in place. THIS item is actually a thin sheet of vinyl (?) with adhesive, and I ended up liking it so much I bought more and re-finished my kitchen countertop with it as well! Highly recommended if you want to change the look of your counters but you don't have the money for a full remodel just yet. It can be cleaned with dish soap and water just like a real countertop." —Z

39. Cut down on some visual clutter with an electrical outlet cover with a power strip. Not every guest sees your bedroom, but it's nice to find a tidy solution that just YOU can enjoy!

www.amazon.com

Promising review: "I have an outlet above our mantel that's meant for a wall-mounted TV. We have a large painting covering it. We wanted to use the plug to power two Wi-Fi speakers on the long mantel. The thinness of the plug is perfect behind the painting. The power strip is hidden by a mantel clock. So, we have two speakers on either side and no visible wires. This product may not work for every application, but for us, it's 10 stars." —Chashum

40. Slip on a velvet headboard cover with storage pockets if your headboard still fits perfectly in your bedroom, but it no longer looks so perfect thanks to scratches and other wear and tear. Now you won't even have to shuffle around furniture for a new look!

www.amazon.com

Promising review: "My headboard is only a few years old, but my cats had pulled a bit and left damage. I was looking around to replace it and then found this. It is perfect for what I was looking for. I was able to update the headboard for a great price. I love the softness of the material, and I did not have any issue pulling the cover on. The color is a lovely chocolate and matches my bedding. I did brown over brown, but I think this is thick enough to cover if you are changing the color. I had no idea this even existed, and they are such a great option to update your bedroom for a great price." —Mary

41. Do (quite frankly), the bare minimum for fixing up a piece of furniture with a wood polish and conditioner that'll make your dinged-up things look so much better.

www.amazon.com

Promising review: "What is this sorcery?! I've been slowly replacing my hand-me-down furniture with mid-century beauties. The pieces I can afford are in good but not perfect shape. There are scratches, dents, scuffs, etc. This stuff is MAGIC. It doesn't help the physical dents, obviously, but it virtually erases the color defects so your eyes don't even register the damage. I bought this after seeing it in a BuzzFeed article about must-have household care products, and this really is essential. After I used it on my bedroom suite, I tried it on my door frames, and WOW. My house is old, built in the '60s, and the tired, worn-down wood has come back to life! This is a long-term relationship, and I will always have some on hand." —Lisa McCool

42. Or try out a pack of furniture touch-up sticks that are even easier to use. It's just like coloring in the lines! Gotta love a quick fix.

www.amazon.com

Includes six repair markets, six paper-wrapped wax sticks, and one wax stick sharpener packaged in a blister card.

Promising review: "I. LOVE. THESE. MARKERS!! I bought this because I was using a brown Sharpie on my coffee table, which was getting chips from normal wear and tear. The Sharpie would always rub off over time, and of course, it was not exactly a color match. I bought these on a whim, and WOW— they are amazing! Even the black worked SO much better on my black bedroom furniture than a normal black Sharpie. These are buildable, so you can start with a semi-transparent, lighter mark, and you can build it up darker as you continue to go over it. (NOTE: I have not even tried the crayons yet because the markers are SO good!)" —SR
