Import Sipovac’s strength is speed and vows to hit ground running for Penang
PETALING JAYA: Penang have made a bold statement in the transfer market by signing one of the fastest wingers in European football – Bosnian speedster Danilo Sipovac.
And the 25-year-old Sipovac is eagerly waiting to make his mark as quick as possible for his new team in the new Super League.
With a blistering top speed of 36kph, Sipovac is expected to bring serious pace to the Panthers’ flanks.
For context, that’s just 2kph shy of French and Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe, currently recognised as the fastest player in world football.
Penang head coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail had been tracking him for some time, impressed by his explosive form in the Bosnian second division with BSK Banja Luka.
Last season, Sipovac netted seven goals and supplied five assists in just 15 starts, numbers that clearly stood out.
Sipovac is bent on of proving himself.
“The offer from Penang came after my good performances last season. The club had been following me and showed serious interest,” said Sipovac.
“Malaysian football is becoming more attractive, and I believe this is the right step for my development. I’m happy to have joined a big club like Penang. Everyone has given me a warm welcome.”
Sipovac’s arrival adds firepower and flair to a Penang side already boasting experienced campaigners like Tchetche Kipre and Bruno Suzuki and another mercurial winger in the form of Australian Dylan Wenzel-Halls.
With such talent up front, the Panthers look well-equipped to pose a real threat this season.
“My goal in Malaysia is to prove myself, give my best for the team, and help Penang achieve good results,” said Sipovac.
“I love that under our coach we play attacking football, it suits my style perfectly. Speed is one of my greatest strengths, and I want to use it to leave a mark in this league.”
Before lighting up Banja Luka, Sipovac featured for a string of clubs across Eastern Europe, including FC Koper (Slovenia), Bokelj (Montenegro), and several Bosnian outfits such as Zvijezda, Sloga Meridian, Zrinjski Mostar, FK Krupa and Leotar Trebinje.
Penang fans will be hoping that Sipovac’s pace and flair can propel the team to new heights, and perhaps make him a household name across the country.
The northern state finished 10th in the Super League last year.
