NEW DELHI - Top order batter Shubman Gill was appointed India's new test captain on Saturday succeeding Rohit Sharma, who quit the format earlier this month.
With Virat Kohli following Rohit into test retirement, Gill will lead a depleted India team in a five-test tour of England starting on June 20.
Veteran seamer Mohammed Shami was left out following a late injury setback, although he played in the Indian Premier League.
Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has been named Gill's deputy in the test squad.
