Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez have turned the how-it-started, how-it’s-going meme on its head.

Not that the newlyweds, who tied the knot in Venice on June 27, didn’t have a glamorous courtship leading up to their bazillion-dollar nuptials. But they did have a somewhat scandalous debut as a couple.

While Bezos characterized his 2019 divorce from MacKenzie Scott as amicable, it came out of the blue for anyone who wasn’t paying much attention to the billionaire Amazon founder’s personal life.

Which was most people, considering the father of four had been married for 25 years.

"Though the labels might be different," Bezos tweeted at the time, “we remain a family, and we remain friends."

Even less expected: Bezos’ next romantic chapter making headlines within hours of his Jan. 9, 2019, split announcement.

Because, as it turned out, he was already in a relationship with Sánchez. And the former Good Day LA co-host was separated but not yet divorced from talent agency executive Patrick Whitesell.

That same day, Bezos and Sánchez's alleged sexy text exchanges were published by the National Enquirer in the course of painting their relationship as a shocking extramarital affair.

An attorney for Bezos told the publication it was "widely known" that Bezos was "long separated" from Scott. Meanwhile, a source told Page Six that Scott knew about her ex's new relationship, and that Sánchez was openly with Bezos at the 2019 Golden Globes on Jan. 6 as his date.

Bezos also alleged that the Enquirer had threatened to publish intimate photos he allegedly sent Sánchez if he didn't make a favorable public statement about the tabloid.

"Any personal embarrassment AMI could cause me takes a back seat because there's a much more important matter involved here," the Washington Post owner wrote on Medium. "If in my position I can't stand up to this kind of extortion, how many people can?" (The Enquirer stood by its reporting and denied acting unlawfully.)

Bumpy public landing and occasional turbulence aside, Bezos and Sánchez have been thriving as a unit ever since.

"I've always had a career very separate from my partner,” Sánchez told WSJ. Magazine in January 2023. “We love to be together and we love to work together. He's helping me with my [children’s book The Fly Who Flew to Space]. He's getting his pilot's license. We fly together. We work out together. We're together all the time."

Sánchez is the founder of aerial production company Black Ops Aviation. So though Bezos once advised against taking helicopters “whenever possible” after surviving a 2003 crash—“They're not as reliable as fixed-wing aircraft,” he told Fast Company in 2004—he’s back onboard.

“I’ve also learned how to fly the helicopter,” he told CNN in November 2022. Even though, he quipped, Sánchez was "a horrible backseat pilot. She's terrible!"

Sánchez didn't disagree. "I'm like, 'No, no. Pull up. Okay. Okay, Slow down,'" she said with a laugh. "But he's very good."

And Bezos isn't exactly known for running away from a challenge.

"Will you guard your heart against rejection, or will you act when you fall in love?" he posited in the 2010 commencement speech he gave at Princeton University. "Will you play it safe, or will you be a little bit swashbuckling?"

True to form, Sánchez said that Bezos had advised her to “fly fast, take chances,” as she was working on getting her all-female Blue Origin space flight project off the ground.

"That's his motto,” Sánchez told WSJ. Magazine. “He's very encouraging and excited, and he's thrilled we're putting this group together."

But while not even the sky is the limit for the 55-year-old since falling in love with the second-richest person in the world, Sánchez has admittedly had to ground her inclination to “tell everyone everything” about her life.

"It's hard. I'm a very open person," she explained. "I talk a lot. I like to tell all my secrets. I have had to learn that I can't do that. It's a good lesson."

The mom of three—she shares son Nikko Gonzalez, 24, with retired NFL star Tony Gonzalez and son Evan Whitesell, 19, and daughter Ella Whitesell, 17, with her agent ex-husband—continued, “I learned how to not give the location of where I'm at. I can't Instagram things that I normally would have before. I have to be more private, a little more controlled, and that's fine."

But she was happy to share that, on a typical Saturday, “we hang out, we have dinner with the kids, which is always fun because you never know where the conversation is going to go with this many kids.”

And on an average Sunday morning, Bezos makes pancakes.

"He wakes up early," Sánchez detailed to WSJ. "He gets the Betty Crocker cookbook out every time, and I'm like, 'OK, you're the smartest man in the world; why don't you have this memorized yet?' But he opens it up every time: Exact portions make the best pancakes in the world."

 Well, naturally the 61-year-old wants to treat Sánchez—“the most generous, most big-hearted person that you would ever meet,” Bezos told CNN—to the perfect flour-milk-egg ratio.

And Sánchez’s heart has found its match.

"We're really great teammates, and we also have a lot of fun together," she told CNN. "And we love each other." Added Bezos, "It's easy. We bring each other energy, we respect each other. So, it's fun to work together."

Incidentally, he concluded his 2010 address at Princeton by reiterating how he often thinks about how he wants to feel when he looks back on his life from a more advanced age.

"I will hazard a prediction," Bezos said. "When you are 80 years old, and in a quiet moment of reflection narrating for only yourself the most personal version of your life story, the telling that will be most compact and meaningful will be the series of choices you have made. In the end, we are our choices. Build yourself a great story."

Jeff paid tribute to Lauren on her 55th birthday Dec. 19, 2024, with a photo celebrating the release of The Fly Who Flew to Space—which rocketed right onto the New York Times Best Seller List.

"What an incredible year — you set your mind to writing a children’s book and now you’re a NYT best selling author," he wrote on Instagram. "I have a feeling your next trip around the sun will be just as amazing. Happy birthday, baby!"

The power couple were among the VIPs who secured a prime viewing position to watch President Donald Trump be sworn in for a second time on Jan. 20, 2025.

Following the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, Jeff and Lauren stepped out for the annual Vanity Fair Oscars Party, where she wore a bridal-inspired Oscar de la Renta gown.

As Lauren set off on the all-female Blue Origin space flight alongside Gayle King, Katy Perry, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, activist Amanda Nguyen and producer Kerianne Flynn, Jeff—who founded the space tech company in 2000—was right there to escort his fiancée aboard the rocket.

“I’m so excited for you, I don’t wanna get off,” he said before the takeoff on April 14, 2025. “I wanna go with you.”
