Jacky Cheung Struggles to Sing; Nearly Ends Concert & Offers Fans Refund
Heavenly King Jacky Cheung’s Dongguan concert has been wrought with twists and turns.
Part of the Jacky Cheung 60+ World Tour, the three-night concert was originally scheduled for June 6 to 8.
But because two dates clashed with China’s national college entrance exams (Gaokao) and the venue was near testing sites, the shows were postponed to August 29 to 31.
On Aug 31, during the final show, the 61-year-old star stunned the audience when he announced midway that he might have to stop the performance.
“Everyone saw how hard it was for me to control my voice at the beginning. I’ve been doing this for 40 years, and if I can’t deliver a performance that I am satisfied with, I cannot get past this hurdle.
“The songs I chose today are not easy to sing, and I don’t have confidence I can finish tonight’s show. I know this is unfair to my musicians and over 20 dancers who all performed brilliantly. I feel very sorry, but I have to end the concert here.”
His words left the audience in shock.
Jacky continued: “I hate myself for cancelling a concert — this is already the second time. The last time wasn’t even my fault. I really want to sing, but I just can’t.”
Turning his back to the crowd to compose himself, he choked up before continuing: “I want so badly to sing, but I can’t. I’ll try my best, though I don’t know how this will end. I can still dance, I can still do the splits. But singing? I have no confidence. My voice is hoarse now, as everyone can hear.”
Even as he discussed refund options with the audience, fans cheered him on.
Finally, he decided to press ahead: “How about this — I’ll keep singing, and if I really can’t go on, you’ll get a refund, okay?”
With sheer determination and the support of his fans, Jacky managed to complete the concert.
And this is why he is the Heavenly King.
