Jana Kramer Is Being Called ‘Lazy & Irresponsible’ for This Parenting Move — & We Understand the Backlash
Kids come with a lot of accessories in the summer. Water bottles, swimsuits, towels, goggles, floaties, hats, and sunscreen — it’s a wonder we ever leave the house! Jana Kramer just admitted to skipping one of the essentials when taking her three kids out, and people are shaming her for the “lazy and irresponsible” parenting move.
The One Tree Hill alum, who is mom to Jolie, 9, Jace, 6, and Roman, 19 months, was chatting with friend Kathryn Woodard about teens being obsessed with the daily UV index on an episode of her Whine Down With Jana Kramer podcast. During the conversation, Kramer admitted that she hardly ever uses sunscreen on her kids.
“I’m gonna get a lot of hate on this,” Kramer said during the podcast, per PEOPLE. “I am well aware that I should have worn sunscreen as a child. I am well aware. And I know my mom put on the Coppertone Baby, whatever SPF on me. Having said that, my mother was the generation who used no sunscreen and used the baby oil, right? If my mother gave me anything more than an 8 SPF, I would be like, ‘I cannot get a tan with anything less than 8.’”
Still, despite the harmful damage UV rays and sunburns can do to our bodies, Kramer doesn’t feel the same pull to put sunscreen on her kids. “I don’t use sunscreen on my kids unless it’s going to be for hours outside because I know they don’t burn,” Kramer revealed. “And there’s so much bad stuff in sunscreen that if we’re not going to be out there for more than a couple hours, listen, come at me. But I’m just not putting it on.”
She added, “I will if we’re on the beach for hours and the reflection of all the things, like I’ll put it on his neck, his ears — the baby — but like the kids, I haven’t put on any on them because I’m like, they’re not getting burned. What’s worse, the burn, or the suntan lotion?”
In a clip of the podcast posted on Instagram, people were quick to fill up the comments calling out the actress. “Not putting sunscreen on your kids is downright lazy and irresponsible,” one person wrote.
Another wrote, “I once had a coworker who had skin cancer taken off her back at 20 years old! And that changed my outlook from then on-i never went back to the tanning bed again.”
Others praised Kramer’s no-sunscreen philosophy, claiming that it causes cancer and puts toxins in your body. But what do experts say?
Research has shown that 50 to 80 percent of the skin damage induced by sun exposure occurs in childhood and adolescence, meaning that skin aging and skin cancer can be linked to childhood sun damage. Yikes! Pediatrician Dr. Edith Bracho-Sanchez previously told SheKnows that some sunscreen is better than others. For example, you want sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection, with an SPF of 30 or above, and mineral sunscreen made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as opposed to chemical sunscreens. (It’s worth noting that chemical sunscreens have not been linked to adverse effects, and many of the ingredients in chemical sunscreens are also found in our moisturizers, makeup, and other skin products.)
The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology (AOCD) recommends keeping children out of the sun during peak hours (11 a.m.-3 p.m.), dress them in clothes and hats that offer sun protection, and cover their exposed skin with sunscreen, starting at least 6 months of age. And, yes, even kids with dark skin need sunscreen to protect against sun damage.
While we would never call another mom names or shame her for a choice she makes with her kids, we do think Kramer should listen to expert advice and consider using sunscreen on her kids. After all, they are too young to know better, and by the time they are old enough, the damage might have already been done.
