Jana Kramer doesn't wanna be anything other than a source of support.

That's why the One Tree Hill alum sees herself more as a "cool friend" than a stepmom to her husband Allan Russell's teenage son Troy from a previous relationship.

"He’s got an amazing mom, he's got you," Jana told Allan on the June 18 episode of iHeartRadio's Whine Down with Jana Kramer podcast. "I just am here as a friend and support."

She continued, "Yes, I am a stepmom but I look at it as notthe mom, but as a friend because he’s got a great mom."

According to Jana, she never wanted to push the stepmom dynamic on Troy because she "came from a divorce background" and understands how it felt when her own parents were introducing new partners to the family.

"It’s like, ‘I’m not looking for another mom,’" she recalled her younger self telling her dad, explaining that it's always  "harder" for stepparents to come into a family with older kids.

And that's also why the "I Got the Boy" singer—who shares kids Jolie, 9, and Jace, 6, with ex Mike Caussin and son Roman, 19 months, with Allan—changed her approach to co-parenting when it came to Troy, noting, "I don't get to see him as much as I would like to."

"I just always just want to be at least a friend," she added. "Someone that's always there."

For Allan, it warms his heart to see how well they've blended their families together. In fact, he noted to the 90210 actress that Troy will "tell you things that he won't tell me."

"You do it well," the former soccer player told Jana. "He knows he can have a laugh with you." 

Allan added, "It goes back to kids wanting stability and safety."

Jolie started second grade in 2023, sharing that she wants to be an actress and singer like her mom.

"Someone is excited for their first day of school and someone is not," Jana joked. "2nd grade and the last year of preschool here they come!"

"Celebrated Christmas morning with the kiddos today," she wrote on Dec. 26, 2022. "It was still the same joy even on a different day…and it even snowed just like a true Christmas Day. Pure magic. Thanks to the mommas who told me about this idea." But not all was festive, as she noted, "And a big Shoutout to the grinch for leaving me the flu in my stocking and an ear infection for Jace."

Jana was feeling "blessed" on New Year's Eve 2022. "Happy New Years from me and my babies!" she wrote.

Jana and Jolie had a mother-daughter boating trip in July 2023.

The actress captioned the shot, "Best mommy daughter time."

The "I Got the Boy" singer gave a glimpse into "life lately" in June 2023, featuring Jolie enjoying a sweet summer treat.

Her son Jace was all smiles after removing his Spider-Man face paint while bearing a "Brotherhood" T-shirt.
