Jeff Bezos unveiled his secretive artificial intelligence startup Prometheus on Thursday, revealing a $12 billion funding round that values the company at $41 billion and ranks it among the most heavily funded AI ventures ever launched.
The company, which Bezos has been quietly building with former Google X executive Vik Bajaj since late 2024, aims to develop AI systems capable of designing and engineering real-world products, from pharmaceuticals and jet engines to bridges and spacecraft.
The investors include JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, DST Global, Arch Venture Partners, and Bezos himself, who contributed capital in both the initial $6.2 billion raise and this one.
For Bezos, it is his first CEO role since handing over the reins of Amazon to Andy Jassy in 2021. "Prometheus is the bulk of my time," he told CNBC in an interview accompanying the announcement.
Most AI companies are building tools for text, code, images, and conversation in the digital world. Prometheus is going after the physical one.
The company's goal is to build what Bezos calls an "artificial general engineer": an AI system that can design, simulate and help manufacture complex physical products, from jet engines to drug compounds to bridges to spacecraft.
Think of it as ChatGPT, but instead of generating words from the internet, it generates engineering solutions from the accumulated knowledge of how physical things are built and how they behave in the real world.
"The cycle from dream to manufacturing at scale, to having it out in the world can be very long," Bezos told Axios. "What we're doing is building a set of tools that will empower engineers to compress that cycle time and make that dream-build loop 10 times faster or even more."
Bezos and Bajaj are co-CEOs. Bajaj is a former co-founder of Verily, Google's life sciences unit, and a professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, making him the scientific counterpart to Bezos's operational and capital firepower.
Prometheus currently employs approximately 150 people across offices in San Francisco, London, and Zurich. For a company valued at $41 billion, that is a remarkably small team by comparison. OpenAI has over 1,500 employees.
The lean headcount reflects a philosophy Bajaj described directly: AI doing the heavy lifting, with humans focused on the highest-level creative and strategic decisions. A large portion of the $12 billion will go toward computing the vast processing power needed to train and run physical simulation AI at scale.
Bajaj said Prometheus aims to cover the entire engineering pipeline from initial design and prototyping through performance simulation and manufacturing.
Applications include aerospace (designing and testing components faster), pharmaceuticals (simulating how drug compounds interact with biological systems, potentially cutting years off drug development timelines), infrastructure, and industrial manufacturing.
Bezos explicitly denied that Prometheus is building robots. The product is software, specifically AI that makes human engineers dramatically more productive rather than replacing them wholesale.
"The pace of our physical creation right now is nowhere near the pace of human imagination," Bajaj told Axios. "If we can make it just a little bit easier, or hopefully a lot easier, to bring to life what people dream of, there's going to be a lot more invention and a lot more people involved in it."
Bezos told CNBC he believes AI-driven productivity gains will ultimately produce "labor scarcity," a world where demand for human workers outpaces supply, meaning AI creates more opportunity than it eliminates. It is a reassuring argument, and one Bezos has every incentive to make.
Amazon, where he remains executive chairman and largest individual shareholder, has laid off tens of thousands of employees over the past year as CEO Andy Jassy has accelerated the company's own automation push.
Prometheus plans to build a $100 billion fund to buy stakes in manufacturing companies and apply its technology to their operations, according to a March report in The Wall Street Journal, meaning portfolio companies will both benefit from Prometheus's tools and feed it the data it needs to improve.
