It is familiar now, to the point where it almost doesn’t register when it’s playing, even in an interpretation as heartfelt as the one John Legend delivered last night as part of Celebrating America, the prime-time, mid-Covid, virtual, audienceless, small and soaring post-inaugural concert that kicked off the Biden/Harris administration on Wednesday night and made me tear up at a goddamn Katy Perry song.
