Karen Mok drops new album 'Karen Mok & The Masters', unveils explosive ‘Beget’ MV from 'I Ching' trilogy
Karen Mok is back with a bold new musical vision. Teaming up with a powerhouse lineup of instrumentalists, Karen Mok & The Masters have dropped their self-titled debut album — a genre-blending odyssey that fuses I Ching philosophy with rap, rock, synth, and traditional Chinese instrumentation. Anchoring the release is the new music video for ‘Beget’, a powerful finale to the trio of concept tracks known as the I Ching Trilogy.
Crafted alongside Terry Chan, Araiz, and James Lee, Karen Mok & The Masters was born from Mok’s The Big Big Show concert series. The band brings together decades of live experience with masterful improvisation, creating a sonic tapestry where electric guzheng, rap verses, and Beethoven samples coexist with ease.
The album is led by the I Ching Trilogy:
‘Metamorphosis’ – a rock-laced anthem of constant evolution, inspired by the hexagram “革” (change).
‘Yet To Come’ – a cinematic piano-led track that embraces the beauty of the unfinished.
‘Beget’ – a rap-rock fusion exploring the paradox of love and conflict, and the natural dance of opposites.
The newly released music video for ‘Beget’ plays like a visual memoir of the band’s journey — from back-alley jam sessions to arena-sized stages. Filmed across city streets, ruins, and stadiums, it blends analog textures with glitchy effects to mirror the interplay of analog soul and digital edge found in their music. Each band member represents a mythical elemental beast — from Mok’s ever-changing玄豹 (xuanbao) to James Lee’s fierce 白虎 (white tiger) — symbolizing their unique musical forces colliding and coexisting.
Beyond the trilogy, the album also features gems like the fiery live piano duet ‘Love Knows No Fear’, the Nu-metal Beethoven mashup ‘Moonlight (Piano Battle)’, and the slow-burning ‘Her’, described as a sonic journey through emotional landscapes.
With Karen Mok & The Masters, Mok doesn’t just revisit her musical roots — she redefines them, inviting listeners into a rich, philosophical world where East meets West, chaos births clarity, and change is the only constant.
