According to royal protocol, the palace is supposed to remain politically neutral. That stance was honored during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, but it’s been a slippery slope after her passing.
Both King Charles III and Prince William have dipped their toes into the political conversation over the last few years and Donald Trump‘s upcoming royal visit later this year might drag another family member into the fray. A royal expert believes that Kate Middleton could be the “icing on the cake” for the U.S. politician’s visit.
“The icing on the cake for Donald Trump would, of course, be the presence of the Princess of Wales at some of the events and at the state dinner,” former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told The Mirror. “That will depend on her health.”
Bond noted that their presence would likely help in “massaging the President’s ego, and they will play as prominent a part as possible.” Donald Trump has been a loud and proud supporter of the royal family and Charles will likely ask both William and Kate to step up. “It’s what the monarch and his senior working royals must do; it’s their job and their duty and they will do it well,” she added.
Donald Trump’s formal visit with the royal family was confirmed by CNN on June 25. “His Majesty has known President Trump for many years and looks forward to hosting him and the First Lady later this year,” a palace aide told the media outlet. The date hasn’t been locked down, but sources claim that both sides are eyeing September for the visit.
The royal family is reportedly eager to woo Donald Trump and hopefully refocus his threat to make the Commonwealth of Canada the 51st state of the U.S. The Prince of Wales had an unplanned visit with the politician at the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in December 2024 as a show of goodwill — and Donald Trump fell for the bait.
“[William] looked really, very handsome last night,” Donald Trump gushed to the New York Post after their visit. “Some people look better in person. He looked great. He looked really nice, and I told him that. And I asked him about his wife, and he said she’s doing well. I asked him about his father and his father is fighting very hard, and he loves his father, and he loves his wife, so it was sad.”
Despite Donald Trump’s love of the monarchy, Queen Elizabeth was reportedly not a fan of the controversial political figure.
“A few weeks after President Trump’s visit, for instance, she confided in one lunch guest that she found him ‘very rude’: she particularly disliked the way he couldn’t stop looking over her shoulder, as though in search of others more interesting,” Craig Brown wrote in his book, Q: A Voyage Around the Queen. “She also believed President Trump ‘must have some sort of arrangement‘ with his wife Melania, or else why would she have remained married to him?”
The royal visit will likely draw a lot of attention to Kate’s rumored participation, but fans know she will handle her royal duties like a total pro.
