Kate Middleton had a flurry of public engagements this week, but she also has her royal calendar full next week, too.
Donald and Melania Trump‘s state visit to the U.K. is supposed to be a formal engagement with King Charles III and Queen Camilla, but the Tatler is reporting that it is Kate and Prince William who will “truly hold court.” The two-day trip from Sept. 17-18 will include the Prince and Princess of Wales greeting the president and first lady at Windsor Castle, but it’s Kate and Melania’s solo event that has everyone buzzing.
On the second day, they are set to meet with the members of The Scout Association’s Squirrels program for a nature adventure. Kate was assigned to the joint presidency role of the group in 2020, which ties into herlove of the outdoors. Royal watchers shouldn’t be surprised that Kate and William are taking on such a crucial role during Donald Trump’s state visit.
In December 2024, the Prince of Wales took a private meeting with the then-president elect at the Notre Dame Cathedral reopening. The future king’s trip to France was a “hastily arranged diplomatic mission” because the U.K. government realized that there was so much “at stake” with Donald Trump’s second presidency, per The Telegraph. They wanted to avoid “potential pitfalls” with the controversial politician, so William was flown in.
Evie Aspinall, director of the British Foreign Policy Group, told iNews, “Donald Trump, he loves family, he loves the pomp of the monarchy, and I think that’s an exciting way for him to feel important,” she explained. “Being seen to be recognized by the Royal Family is something, I think, that he would like.”
Donald Trump bragged about his visit with William in Paris. “He looked really, very handsome last night. Some people look better in person. He looked great. He looked really nice, and I told him that,” he told the New York Post after the visit. “And I asked him about his wife, and he said she’s doing well. I asked him about his father, and his father is fighting very hard, and he loves his father, and he loves his wife, so it was sad.
The only person who might not love the idea of William’s diplomatic role would be the late Queen Elizabeth II, who reportedly was not a fan of Donald Trump. Author Craig Brown wrote about the queen’s dislike of the U.S. president in Q: A Voyage Around the Queen.
“A few weeks after President Trump’s visit, for instance, she confided in one lunch guest that she found him ‘very rude’: she particularly disliked the way he couldn’t stop looking over her shoulder, as though in search of others more interesting,” Brown wrote. “She also believed President Trump ‘must have some sort of arrangement‘ with his wife, Melania, or else why would she have remained married to him?”
All eyes will be on Kate and William next week as they welcome Donald and Melania Trump to the U.K. during a contentious time in global politics.
