Twelve years ago, the esteemed stage and screen actress Kathleen Chalfant received a $20 million cash offer for her West Village home. It was $18.5 million more than Ms. Chalfant, 81, and her husband, the notable graffiti photographer and sculptor Henry Chalfant, spent to buy the brick townhouse in 1994. Mrs. Chalfant said she knew it would be “crazy” not to accept the offer, so the couple sold the home and immediately began searching for a new abode.

Mrs. Chalfant has lived and worked in New York City for 53 years. When she was raising her two children in an apartment on the Upper West Side, she helped found the prominent Off Broadway theater Playwrights Horizons, made her Off Broadway debut in “Jealousy” and played multiple roles in the original Broadway production of Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America,” for which she received a Tony nomination.
