Klopp admits he was wowed as he names his best Liverpool signing
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has named local hero Trent Alexander-Arnold as his best signing for the club, revealing that he was “immediately” impressed with the England international.Alexander-Arnold made his debut for his hometown club in the EFL Cup in October 2016 and he finished the 2016/17 campaign having also featured in the Premier League and FA Cup.The 2017/18 campaign then saw him compete well with Joe Gomez at right-back, leading to inclusion in England’s World Cup squad. But Alexander-Arnold took huge strides forward last season, grabbing 16 assists in all competitions, and he has followed that up this time round with 14 before the campaign was brought to a halt.Speaking to the Pure Football Podcast, Klopp opened up about how he and his assistant, Pepijn Lijnders, saw quickly the potential Alexander-Arnold had.“Its Trent [Alexander-Arnold],” the manager said when asked who his best signing was.“We didnt have to buy him but Pep Lijnders my assistant brought him around and said: He played No.6 [role] for me. He played full-back, he played right wing, left wing.“Then he came and there was only one problem: Trent was not fit enough. But he was a kid so he was not fit enough but we saw immediately, wow, football wise no doubts.“But [he was] not fit enough so we had to work on that. But then he made steps by himself that were really unbelievable and that was really nice to see. Then he made mistakes and didnt give up.”While Alexander-Arnold is now often the focal point of Liverpool‘s creativity – alongside fellow full-back Andy Robertson – he has been criticised for his weaknesses in defence.Indeed, Alexander-Arnold received flak for his role in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the 2017/18 campaign.Klopp admitted in the same podcast that he felt “fully responsible” for the criticism his full-back received that day.READ MORE: Sadio Mane opens up on Man Utd interest
