KUCHING (July 10): A raid by police on a house in Stampin Baru here on Tuesday saw the arrest of a 46-year-old man on suspicion of trafficking in illicit drugs.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the raid was conducted by a team from the state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) at around 8.10pm.

“Seized during the operation was approximately 70.5g of drugs believed to be methamphetamine, worth an estimated RM7,750.

“The suspect has been remanded until July 14 for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952,” he said in a statement today.

The Section provides for the death penalty or life imprisonment, and not less than 12 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death.

Alexson also said initial screening found the suspect positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

“However, a background check found he did not have any prior record related to drugs,” he added.

Meanwhile, a separate raid by Kuching NCID personnel in the Tabuan Dusun area on the same day led to the seizure of 5.1g of methamphetamine worth RM561, and arrest of a 39-year-old man.

Alexson said the suspect, who tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, has been remanded until July 12 for investigation under Section 39A(1) of the DDA.

If convicted, the suspect faces between two and five years’ imprisonment, and between three and nine strokes of the cane.

Alexson called on the public to continue channelling information on drug-related activities to the police to enable firm action to be taken.
