Lawn bowlers Amirul-Soufi just a win away from semis spot

PETALING JAYA: National lawn bowlers Amirul Danial Abdul Rahim-Soufi Rusli moved within one win of the Commonwealth Games semi-finals spot after extending their unbeaten run in Glasgow.

The duo secured their fourth straight win in Group A after edging past Welsh pair Daniel Salmon and Ross Owen, winning 3-2, 5-2 at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in the pairs competition yesterday.

Amirul-Soufi will face Guernsey’s Ian Merrien-Jason Greenslade today in their final group match, with a win sealing their spot in the semi-finals.

On Wednesday, the Malaysian pair defeated Jersey’s Ross Davis-Malcolm de Sousa 2-1, before pulling off a 2-0 win against Niue’s Tifaga Tupuiliu-Keith Papani on Thursday.

They had started their group stage run by beating Malta’s Troy Lorimer and Shaun James Parnis 2-0 in the tiebreak after scoring 1-1 on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, world No. 1 Emma Firyana Saroji stayed on track as well after beating India’s Nayanmoni Saikia 1.5-0.5 for her third group win in the singles event.

Emma had earlier beaten Isle of Man’s Caroline Whitehead and Zambia’s Mildred Mkandawire on Wednesday.
