PETALING JAYA: For Luqman Hakim Shamsudin, his return to Malaysian football is more than just a career move - it is a heartfelt mission to honour the dream of his late father, Shamsudin Mahmood, and prove that he still has plenty to offer the game.

After five challenging years abroad, where opportunities were scarce and personal heartache struck, the 23-year-old has signed with Negri Sembilan for the 2025-2026 season, determined to restart his journey with purpose.

“This is the best time for me to prove myself and fulfil my family’s wishes - especially my late father’s dream of seeing me succeed in Malaysian football,” said Luqman, who has played for Malaysia nine times.

Luqman’s father, who passed away due to a heart attack on Nov 3 last year at the age of 67, had long harboured hopes of watching his son shine in the local league and don national colours.

Luqman, the youngest of six siblings, was playing in Japan at the time and could not make it back in time to see him one last time.

“I missed the chance to see his face before he was laid to rest. He passed on at 1.30pm, and I arrived too late. It hit me hard, especially knowing I hadn’t spent much time with him over the years.

“But his support and final words have become my new source of strength. That’s what fuels me now.”

His career overseas began in 2020 when he joined KV Kortrijk in Belgium.

But despite the hype, his development stalled as he struggled for minutes. Loan spells with Njardvik in Iceland and YSCC Yokohama in Japan followed, but Luqman admits those years didn’t unfold the way he envisioned.

Now back on home soil, his reasons are both personal and professional.

“I want to be closer to my family, especially my mother who is in Kelantan. And I truly believe it’s not too late to reignite my form and passion.

“This will be my first time playing in the Super League, and I’m excited to begin this new chapter with Negri.”

Luqman sees this season as an opportunity to rebuild both his confidence and reputation after years of setbacks abroad.

“This is my chance to restore what I once had, not just for myself, but for the team,” he said.
