M’sian MP Wants National Monument To Look More Asian, Proposes Facial Touch-up

Restoration, sure. But a facial reconstruction?

That’s what Malaysian Opposition MP Kalam Salan had in mind when he suggested that the soldiers at the Tugu Negara (National Monument) could use a little Asian touch-up.

During committee-stage debate of Budget 2026 earlier this week, the Perikatan Nasional MP said the statues’ facial features looked “too European”, particularly their sharp noses.

"Tugu Negara is the symbol of our independence because the statue there that can be seen holding the flag is a national hero,” he said.

"But if you look at their faces, their sharp noses look more like Europeans. Why not change to make them less pointed like that of Malaysians and Asians — like my nose, for example,” he said, touching his own nose.

He added the current design seemed to “glorify colonisers”.

He proposed tweaking the monument, which was built in 1966, to better reflect the features of real Malaysian heroes and, hopefully, ignite a stronger sense of patriotism.

So, not just a facelift, but a whole new face for the nation’s most iconic sculpture, if he gets his way.
