OFFENDERS who have failed to settle their outstanding compounds with the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) for more than six months have been warned to do so immediately or risk being barred from conducting transactions with the council starting Sept 1.

MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the council would no longer tolerate persistent defaulters who continue to ignore repeated reminders.

“This is a serious warning. Kindly settle your outstanding summonses now. Beginning September 1, anyone with arrears will not be able to deal with MBPP, including licence applications and renewals,” he cautioned.

He stressed that the expansion of restrictions was necessary to ensure compliance and prevent further accumulation of unpaid compounds.

“We urge all offenders to clear their arrears without delay to avoid disruption to their dealings with MBPP,” he added.

The public can check their compound status through the “Pearl One Touch Penang” mobile application or by contacting the MBPP Treasury Department.

Rajendran revealed that the total outstanding amount currently stands at RM78 million, accumulated from 2008 to July 31 this year.

Earlier during the council meeting, councillor Lee Wei Seang raised concerns over abandoned vehicles, describing them as both an eyesore and a growing problem in Penang.

“Abandoned vehicles are not just an issue of cleanliness and appearance. They pose safety hazards, serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, create potential spots for criminal activities, and contribute to visual pollution,” he said.

Among the proposed measures to address the issue are stronger collaboration with the police and Road Transport Department (RTD), enhanced enforcement, and public awareness campaigns.
