The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been instructed to prepare a full report following the alleged leak of personal data involving popular entrepreneur and content creator Khairul Aming.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said he has also arranged a meeting with the company involved to determine how the incident occurred and what steps would be taken to prevent a recurrence.

He urged members of the public to immediately report similar incidents to MCMC if they come across cases involving the unauthorised disclosure of personal information.

“If anyone encounters a similar incident, please lodge a report with MCMC through aduan.mcmc.gov.my so that we have the necessary records and evidence to facilitate further action,” he was quoted as saying by Harian Metro.

Fahmi stressed that customer databases and personal information should never be accessible to unauthorised individuals.

He added that the deliberate disclosure of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) may constitute an offence under the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), with legal action able to be taken against those responsible.

“Appropriate action can be taken under the Act. However, we also urge affected users to lodge both a police report and a report with MCMC,” he said.

The issue surfaced after Khairul Aming, widely known as KA, publicly demanded an explanation from his telecommunications service provider – Maxis – over the alleged leak of his telephone bill.

The controversy began when a Threads user shared what appeared to be details of the entrepreneur’s outstanding phone bill in a post that many viewed as an attempt to provoke or ridicule him.

Meanwhile, Maxis said its internal investigation found that the alleged data leak appeared to be an isolated incident, although the telecommunications provider did not elaborate further on the circumstances surrounding the case.

“We are reaching out to the customer this morning regarding this matter.

“We have identified the individual linked to this incident and are taking immediate action, including pursuing legal proceedings.

“We sincerely apologise for this incident and remain firmly committed to safeguarding our customers’ privacy and protecting their personal data,” the company said.
