Madonna Attended ‘A Truly Sacred Ritual’ With Daughters Mercy & Lourdes in a Rare New Video
Turning 67 isn’t typically a milestone birthday, but Madonna is anything but typical. The Queen of Pop celebrated her big day in a huge way — by attending “a truly sacred ritual” in Italy with two of her kids, Mercy, 19, and Lourdes, 28.
The “Material Girl” singer shared a video of the special occasion on Instagram, revealing that attending a sacred ceremony on her birthday, Aug. 16, was a dream come true.
“My Dream for many years has been to watch the Palio horse race in Sienna that takes place on my birthday, August 16, since 1482!!” Madonna captioned the video. The historic event draws people to compete on a horse race in the Piazza del Campo, with thousands of spectators cheering them on. Madonna watched from a balcony with her daughters and her 29-year-old boyfriend Akeem Morris.
“There are no words to describe The excitement , the suspense and the Pageantry!!” Madonna continued. “A truly sacred ritual to witness thousands of people hushed to a silence before the race begins! The race itself is impossible to describe. Grazie Mille! 🇮🇹🐎🐎🐎.”
“Dreams do come true! Happy Birthday to me!!! ♥️ Ciao Italia!” she added.
Imagine a whole city throwing a party on your birthday? She is Madonna, after all, but still. We bet finding a present for this global superstar would be challenging, so her daughters really won with this lavish getaway instead.
In the video, you can see Madonna watching the excitement from her balcony, dressed in a festive purple cape. Later, she danced with Morris, and blew out candles on her gigantic Labubu-shaped birthday cake with the words: “Happy Birthday Madudu.” (Madudu?! Obsessed with this nickname.)
The trip contained many fabulous ‘fits, tons of dancing, piano playing by Mercy, and fireworks. It looks truly amazing! The birthday video was fittingly set to Tony Dallara’s “Come Prima.” (Page Six has screenshotsHERE.)
Madonna shares Lourdes with ex Carlos Leon and adopted Mercy in 2009. She is also mom to son Rocco, 24, and adopted son David, 19, with ex Guy Ritchie, and she adopted 12-year-old twins Stella and Estere in 2012.
The comments were filled with star-studded birthday wishes. “MY QUEEN,” Katy Perry wrote. Andy Cohen commented, “Happy Birthday Queen.”
“Happy Birthday!! Tom@and I are sending you LOVE!💗” Tom Hanks’ wife Rita Wilson commented.
In a previous interview with British Vogue, Madonna opened up about society making her feel less than. “People have always been trying to silence me for one reason or another, whether it’s that I’m not pretty enough, I don’t sing well enough, I’m not talented enough, I’m not married enough, and now it’s that I’m not young enough,” she said. “So they just keep trying to find a hook to hang their beef about me being alive on. Now I’m fighting ageism, now I’m being punished for turning 60.”
She’s fighting against ageism and paving the way for women in the future. “There are no living role models for me. Because nobody does what I do. And that’s kind of scary,” she told the outlet. “I can look back at women who I think were great and amazing – freedom fighters, like Simone de Beauvoir or Angela Davis – but they didn’t have kids. Being a single parent of six children, I continue to be creative and be an artist and be politically active, to have a voice, to do all the things that I do. So I mean, there isn’t anybody in my position.”
And now at 67, Madonna continues to impress us by following her dreams, being an active mother, and giving back too. What an icon!
