Malaysia to install guard rails at all train station platforms after fatal incident

PUTRAJAYA - Platform guard rails will be put up at all train stations to prevent unwanted incidents, said Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke on June 4 .

During a press conference at the ministry’s headquarters in Putrajaya, Mr Loke said such guard rails have already been installed at newer MRT stations, as well as along the Kuala Lumpur Monorail line.

“But they have not been installed yet at several stations along the Ampang LRT line,” he said . “I have requested (service operator) Prasarana (Malaysia) to implement this. However, installing guard rails at all stations will incur major costs (and) additional budget is needed.

“We are making this a priority to enhance security at all stations.”

Asked if there was a timeline for the installation, Mr Loke said Prasarana was making the necessary preparations.

“It all boils down to the budget,” he added.

Mr Loke’s statement came after a man died after falling onto the train tracks at Pusat Bandar Puchong LRT station on the evening of June 3 .

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department said a team from the Subang Jaya fire station found the victim unconscious under a train carriage.

The foreign national in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was handed over to the police for further action.

Rapid KL said train services between Bandar Puteri, Taman Perindustrian Puchong, Pusat Bandar Puchong and IOI Puchong Jaya stations were halted because of the incident.

On June 4 , Mr Loke said CCTV footage of the incident would be handed over to the police for the investigation. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
