Man dies in police custody at Seremban 2 lockup

SEREMBAN:  A man in remand at the Seremban 2 police station lockup died at 6.30pm yesterday.

Negri Sembilan police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the 46-year-old local man had been detained on Aug 28 in connection with a motorcycle theft case.

"A death incident involving a detainee occurred at the Seremban 2 police station lockup, where the man was remanded two days ago for an offence under Section 379a of the Penal Code," he told reporters today.

The man was reportedly brought before a magistrate in good health for the remand application, with no complaints made to the magistrate or the lawyer.

At around 6.30pm yesterday, officers on duty found the detainee unconscious after being woken by another inmate.

Medical teams were called immediately and confirmed the man's death at the location.

Police informed the deceased's family and launched an immediate investigation into the incident.

A post-mortem conducted at the Forensic Medical Unit of Rembau Hospital found no internal or external injuries on the body.

"At this stage, we are still awaiting the full report from the hospital to determine the exact cause of death, which will require chemical tests for further clarification," he said.

He added that CCTV footage from the lockup showed no signs of altercations or suspicious movements that could have led to the man's death.

An internal investigation is being conducted by the Crime Investigation Unit and Deaths in Custody Unit from the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) from Bukit Aman.

"The police are committed to transparency, accountability, and fairness in handling such incidents and urge the public to allow the investigation to proceed transparently, without making any speculations that could disrupt the legal process," he said.
