Yasslee Rusdi, 40-years-old, pleaded guilty to one count of rashly causing a fire, possessing drug related utensil and consumption of the drug methamphetamine.
He was sentenced to one year and 3 months of imprisonment.
Rusdi checked into a hotel room at Hotel 81 Selegie on 5 May earlier this year, at about 5.40pm.
He was aware that it was a non smoking room but he went on to smoke half a pack of cigarettes, leaving three lit cigarettes on the top of the bed frame.
Rusdi then left the room at around 11pm, and a fire alarm later sounded.
Alvin Quek, 30-years-old, was at the front office at the time when he received calls from the guests of the hotel, complaining that they are smelling smoke.
He then went to investigate the situation and saw smoke emerging from the gap at the bottom of Rusdi’s room door.
He was unable to open the door because Rusdi had propped items against it.
Quek then tried to put out the fire through the gap in the door but failed.
SCDF officers soon arrived and used an internal reel jet to put out the fire and Quek, as well as another hotel guest was conveyed to hospital.
