Man who punched another in Kuching over refusal to lend mobile phone jailed 10 months

KUCHING (July 10): The Magistrates’ Court here today sentenced a man to 10 months’ imprisonment for punching an acquaintance in the face over the latter’s refusal to lend his mobile phone.

Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan convicted Mohd Norman Abdullah, 35, on his own guilty plea to a charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt, framed under Section 325 of the Penal Code.

Mohd Norman committed the offence against the victim, 45, at Pangkalan Panjang Waterfront here at around 10pm on July 2, 2025.

Based on the facts of the case, the victim was walking to retrieve his motorcycle when he was approached by Mohd Norman, who asked to borrow his phone.

The victim, however, declined to hand over the device, claiming it was out of credit.

An enraged Mohd Norman reacted by punching the victim in the face, resulting in a fractured nasal bone and injury to the left eye.

Police arrested the accused on July 6 following a report filed by the victim.
