LONDON – Manchester United signed forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth a reported £62.5 million (S$108.5 million) on June 1.
The Brazilian is expected to pen a five-year contract with the English Premier League club, who have the option of extending the deal by a further 12 months.
“Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha. Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford,” a United statement said.
He was in Manchester over the weekend to put the finishing touches to his move, which is subject to a visa and registration.
Cunha, who has won 13 caps for Brazil, scored 17 goals in all competitions for Wolves this season, winning the club’s Player of the Year award. The Brazilian finished his Wolves career with 33 goals in 92 appearances in all competitions after signing from Atletico Madrid in January 2023.
The 26-year-old has made no secret of his desire to leave Molineux.
“I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential,” Cunha told The Guardian in March.
United activated the release clause in Cunha’s Wolves contract to ensure he becomes manager Ruben Amorim’s first signing of the summer transfer window.
Amorim’s side lost the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur to cap a dismal season featuring a 15th-place finish in the English Premier League that ranked as their lowest final position since 1973-74. He warned this past week that United’s ability to make drastic changes could be impacted by having to meet financial sustainability rules.
Chief executive Omar Berrada said the club had to be “prudent” but can still be ambitious in the transfer window.
“We have a very clear idea of where we need to invest in the squad to improve , so (technical director) Jason (Wilcox), his team and Ruben have been in talks for many months . Now it’s a question of executing that plan and doing it in a way that is prudent but at the same time with ambition,” Berrada told MUTV.
The Red Devils seemed to have missed out on another of their top targets, with widespread reports that Ipswich Town forward Liam Delap is set to move to Chelsea.
The England Under-21 international forward, who scored 12 league goals for his relegated club this season, had been open to moving to United before they missed out on a Champions League spot, according to various media.
The future of United captain Bruno Fernandes, who tallied 19 goals and 20 assists this term, is also in doubt, with Saudi side Al-Hilal apparently considering a £100 million bid. AFP
