Marco Asensio latest: All eyes on Liverpool after Real Madrid and winger combine to make deal easy
A Liverpool deal to sign Marco Asensio looks there for the making after multiple reports detailed why a move is relatively straightforward. The Spaniard, 26, is a name linked with a Premier League switch seemingly every window. Asensio is frequently listed alongside potential moves to Arsenal and Liverpool specifically, though as yet, he has remained in Madrid.Yet the classy attacker’s contract now has just 12 months remaining. As such, his career at Real Madrid is reaching a crossroads. Now, a comprehensive update from Sport Witness has shed light on what the future holds for Asensio.Firstly, prior reports from the Italian press are cited that put Liverpool and Serie A champions AC Milan in the frame. However, according to Monday’s edition of Sport, Milan have reeled back from the chase after favouring a move for Sassuolo’s Domenico Berardi. That removes one obstacle from the equation for Liverpool, and the positive updates keep on coming.Secondly, it’s noted Asensio has not responded to a contract extension Real Madrid tabled some four months ago. It’s deemed the player is waiting to see what opportunities arise, including from clubs like Liverpool.Bargain fee and wage demands revealedA second report from TuttoMercatoWeb adds more detail to the story. They report that given Asensio’s contract status, an offer as low as £21.5m-£26m could be enough to secure a deal.Real president, Florentino Perez, is deemed in a ‘hurry’ to sell the forward. That stance is a reflection of Asensio’s contract status, however, not their belief in the player’s ability. Understandably, Real don’t want to lose him for nothing in 12 months’ time. From the player’s end, Asensio is claimed to be demanding a net salary of £6m-per-year (£115,000-a-week).A salary of that size wouldn’t be an issue for a club like Liverpool, and it’s claimed Asensio may be willing to reduce those demands if a valid and convincing project is put to him anyway. It’s fair to say Jurgen Klopp’s Reds tick that box. There is no suggestion Liverpool are in talks over a move, though if negotiations began, Asensio looks increasingly gettable.Where would Asensio fit in?The left-footer operates primarily on the right flank and enjoyed his best goalscoring season to date last year.Asensio bagged 12 goals in 42 matches across all competitions and could theoretically provide back-up for Mohamed Salah if signed. However, a deal for Asensio would’ve made more sense had Salah actually departed. Given Friday’s contract extension for the Egyptian, Salah won’t be going anywhere until 2025 at the earliest. The Reds have lost three forwards this summer and replaced them with just one. Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino have all left with just Darwin Nunez coming the other way. However, Harvey Elliott can provide cover on Salah’s side and Fabio Carvalho has arrived from Fulham. Paul Merson expects the youngster to be deployed in the final third before potentially dropping deeper later in his career. His primary position at Fulham was as an attacking midfielder. As such, a move for Asensio, regardless of how easy it would be to make, isn’t likely to be a Liverpool priority right now.
