Meryl Streep and Martin Short seem to be in the weirdest dilemma with their fans. The dynamic Only Murders in the Building costars insist that they are “just friends,” but every outing lately feels like a date. Are they the only ones who don’t see their fiery hot chemistry?

Streep and Short were spotted by the paparazzi on Wednesday night leaving one of LA’s celeb-heavy restaurants, Giorgio Baldi. (You can see the photos HERE.) If you want to hide from photographers, this is not the place to dine — so they clearly didn’t mind being seen together. They didn’t eat alone, though. Page Six reported that they were there with a group of friends, so it leaves fans with lots of questions. Streep has said absolutely nothing about the dating rumors, but Short has been quick to cut off the gossip.

The 73-year-old comedian revealed his thoughts on the topic on a January podcast episode of Club Random with Bill Maher. The host joked that Short and Streep were a “power couple” after they looked rather cozy at the Golden Globes, but the former Saturday Night Live star didn’t want to entertain the dating chatter. “We’re not a couple, we are just very close friends,” he told Maher. The coworkers seem to share a warmth, comfortability, and sense of humor that just makes sense to fans, but it doesn’t seem to be a path they want to go down.

Their Only Murders in the Building colleague, Jackie Hoffman, gets to watch them interact all of the time on set, and she told Page Six that it’s nothing but “platonic chemistry.” She added, “I didn’t think for one second [that they were dating]. I think they’re both such good actors that everyone believed it because they wanted to believe it.” Hoffman also joked that their polar opposite personalities might not work in a real-life romantic situation, noting with a laugh, “He’s always ‘on,’ and I can’t picture her tolerating it!”

Fans just see two hot and talented stars, who both happen to be single, as the perfect couple. It sounds like they will only be able to ship them in fan fiction from here on out because Streep and Short are keeping things strictly professional — no matter how hot their palpable chemistry is!
